More Indoor Cats, That's Good; Not So Good Are Fat and Bored Cats ...

More Indoor Cats, That's Good; Not So Good Are Fat and Bored Cats
Japanese home builder Asahi Kasei has built a home for cats - the ultimate in cat enrichment

More cats are finding themselves indoors only, in America and around the world. The results should benefit cats. But do they really? I am a huge fan of keeping cats inside only because I KNOW they are safer. Having said that, too many cat owners are 'parents' to brain dead fat cats. Indoors, they have nothing to do - they become bored....and with food left out all the time, they train their people to do be automatic food dispensers.

As a result, we have an epidemic of overweight cats. With that, a myriad of health issues - including diabetes and arthritis - more than ever seen previously in our cats (by far).

A part of the solution is to prevent that weight gain (which we know is far more likely to happen in spayed/neutered pets). There's now a diet called Royal Canin Spayed/Neutered?(the idea is to prevent weight gain related to being spayed/neutered). Also, don't leave the food out all the ime. But enriching the indoor environment (which inherently means at least some exercise), and interactive play when you are home are key.

In Japan,?homebuilder Asahi Kasei has taken this idea to heart. He's provided catwalks, fish mobiles, and mouse holes for cats to scurry into as a part of the home's design. Overall, what he figured out is that cats use vertical space. Another example ?is Bob?Walker? the Cat's House which is just outside San Diego.

Here are ten ideas which may help to enrich the environments, and the lives of indoor-only cats:

  • An empty box: Who would think that an empty box can create a week?s worth of fun. Leave out an empty box on Monday. On Tuesday, place that same ?box upside down, put something on top to weigh it down and cut ?mouse holes? in the sides; cats can reach inside for treats you?ve hidden. On Wednesday, turn the box right-side up and sprinkle catnip inside. On Thursday relocate the box to another room, and it becomes new all over again. On Friday, place a small ball or squeaky mouse toy inside the box. One empty box, and five days of fun.
  • Ping Pong: Drop a ping pong ball into an empty tissue box to create an instant and free track toy. Track toys (which balls are pushed in tracks) are also available wherever cat toys are sold.
  • More free toys: Paper bags, plastic tops from milk cartons or wine corks.
  • Rotate toys: Relocating toys into another room is all it often takes to make them new and different. Cats can have 1,000 toys, but that?s overwhelming, and ultimately when all the mouse toys are ?killed,? it?s boring ? which is why rotating toys is most interesting to most cats.
  • Think High: You don't need to build catwalks; elevated spaces, such as window ledges, cleared bookshelves, tops of radiators or cat trees. In multi-cat homes, the more raised surfaces for individual cats to call ?mine,? the less conflict between cats.
  • Must Watch-TV: Outdoor bird feeders are entertaining for people and cats. Some cats will watch TV, or DVD?s starring birds or reptiles made specifically for cats.
  • Puzzle This: The Play ?n Treat Ball, Eggsersizer and Cat Slim are all readily available (online and many pet stores) and are inexpensive toys ? all can be filled with kibbles and/or treats, then the cat is taught to roll around the toys for the kibble and treats, which tumble from a hole. Many cats will be motivated once they understand the game. These toys are most fun when cats learn to seek them out at random times (?hunting?) and then finding their ?prey.? Active and young cats might even step it up a notch, using Nina Ottosson food puzzle toys.
  • Two is Best: Most people with a cat actually have two or more cats. Still, there are plenty of single cat homes. Cats are social, and two may keep one another company. Sure, introducing another cat can be tricky, and it?s not for all cats.
  • Safety Outside: Some indoor only cats will take the idea of walking on a leash and harness outside, or being pushed around the neighborhood in a cat stroller. Or for cats who insist on being outside, or might simply enjoy the experience, cat fencing keeps cats in yards and keeps predators out (still, adult supervision is always suggested). A new craze is fencing around patios dubbed catios, so cats can?t dive off and potential predators can?t get at them. Cat fencing is made by various companies, including www.catfencein.com.

Fire at nightclub kills more than 200 in Brazil

PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil (Reuters) - At least 200 people were killed in a nightclub fire in southern Brazil on Sunday after a band's pyrotechnics show set the building ablaze, and fleeing patrons were unable to find the emergency exits, local officials said.

Bodies were still being removed from the Kiss nightclub in the southern city of Santa Maria, Major Gerson da Rosa Ferreira, who was leading rescue efforts at the scene for the military police, told Reuters.

Local officials said 180 people were confirmed dead, and Ferreira said the death toll would rise above 200. He said the victims died of asphyxiation or from being trampled, and that there were possibly as many as 500 people inside the club when the fire broke out at about 2:30 a.m.

Television footage showed people sobbing outside the club, while shirtless firefighters used sledge hammers and axes to knock down an exterior wall to open up an exit.

"It was really fast. There was a lot of smoke, really dark smoke," survivor Aline Santos Silva, 29, told Globonews TV. "We were only able to get out quickly because we were in a VIP area close to the door."

President Dilma Rousseff cut short a visit to Chile and was returning to Brazil following the blaze, her spokesperson said.

Luiza Sousa, a civil police official in Santa Maria, told Reuters the blaze started when a member of the band or its production team ignited a flare, which then set fire to the ceiling. The fire spread "in seconds," Sousa said.

The disaster recalls other incidents including a 2003 fire at a nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island, that killed 100, and a Buenos Aires nightclub blaze in 2004 that killed nearly 200. In both incidents, a band or members of the audience ignited fires that set the establishment ablaze.

Brazil's safety standards and emergency response capabilities are under particular scrutiny as the country prepares to host the 2014 World Cup soccer tournament and the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Rio Grande do Sul state Health Secretary Ciro Simoni said emergency medical supplies from all over the state were being sent to the scene.

Santa Maria is some 186 miles west of the state capital of Porto Alegre. "A sad Sunday!" tweeted Rio Grande do Sul Governor Tarso Genro. He said "all possible measures" were being taken in response and that he was on his way to the scene.

Tips To Help With Home Improvement | Roofers In Kansas City

TIP! When you?re decorating a room in your home, there?s a rule called the 60/30/10 rule that you may want to use. You should use your dominant color in 60% of your room, your secondary color in 30% of your room and the remaining 10% of your color choice as the accent color.

Now, your mind is made up. If you are interested in home improvement, this is the article for you. Now you can! If you?re serious about starting on a new home improvement project, this article will help you to prepare yourself and set the stage for success. In the article below, you will find numerous tips that can help you as you begin a home improvement project.

TIP! For a quick makeover for your home, try adding new paneling on your walls. You can do this quickly without spending a lot.

The credentials of all contractors should be checked prior to hiring. You should always be sure that anyone you hire is qualified for the work they will be doing, and that they employ the high standards in their work. Many common mishaps could have been avoided by ensuring your professional has the proper credentials.

TIP! Clean with an old toothbrush you no longer use. From behind the bathroom sink to a tile floor, they scrub every inch.

Watch for offers from flooring stores and home improvement stores that will save you money on installation fees. In order to increase sales of carpeting, they often include very low cost installation packages for their customers. It is the best time to invest in new flooring for your home because the cost of installation can be more than the materials themselves.

TIP! Don?t just start painting the inside of your house. Prior to doing that, rub off any debris, dirt and oils that have collected on the baseboards and walls.

An easy trick for quick curb appeal when showing your home, is to bring in more mature plants, as opposed to sprouts or seeds. Mature flowers will provide a splash of color to your landscape, and are also great if you need to fill in gaps in your existing beds. Seedlings on the other hand, require lots of time before you see any improvement on the decor of your landscape. Home buyers should feel as if they don?t need to do anything to maintain the yard.

TIP! Use fruit and flowers to freshen up the kitchen. Arrange some flowers into an classy vase or place some colorful fruits in a bowl.

Now, you can face home improvement well-prepared. If you didn?t feel confident before, now you should be all set! With any luck, the tips given should help you begin your next home improvement project.

Study finds linchpin of skin response to UVA light

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

Last year, a team of researchers at Brown University discovered that certain skin cells use a light-sensitive receptor found outside of the eye to sense ultraviolet light and quickly begin pumping out melanin to protect against DNA damage. In a new study, lab members identify a key player in that biomolecular chain of events that could someday become a pharmacological target for improving this protective response.

The new discovery, published the week of Jan. 21 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is that human melaoncyte skin cells rely on an ion channel called TRPA1 to allow a flood of calcium ions into the cells when they are exposed to UVA light. The resulting abundance of calcium ions signals the cell to begin making melanin, the pigment responsible for the tanning response in people.

Several experiments described in the paper show that TRPA1, which is known from a number of other appearances elsewhere in the body, is an essential step in the skin's response to UVA light, said senior author Elena Oancea, assistant professor of medical science in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology, Physiology, and Biotechnology at Brown.

As a matter of basic science, the finding strengthens the evidence of a striking parallel between the skin's response to UVA light and the way the eye detects light.

"Its exciting because it confirms this phototransduction pathway is similar to those found in the eye. It consists of a light-sensitive receptor, molecular signaling cascade, and an ion channel," Oancea said. "The involvement of an ion channel makes this pathway a lot more like other phototransduction pathways."

In other parts of the body, TRPA1 has been shown to help detect pungent but benign chemicals, such as those in intensely flavorful foods. Oancea and lead author Nicholas Bellono said the chemical sensitivity of TRPA1 offers the intriguing possibility that it could become a target for experiments to boost melanin production.

"TRPA1 ion channels are involved in the detection of pungent chemicals such as cinnamaldehyde, wasabi, and mustard oil, and we've now found it's important for this melanin response," Bellono said. "There is a possibility that we can pharmacologically alter pigmentation through regulation of this ion channel."

Oancea and Bellono emphasized, however, that people who go out in the sun should always take widely recommended precautions to protect their skin, such as using high-SPF commercial sunscreens or wearing protective hats and clothing.

Finding the channel

From the prior research in Oancea's lab, Bellono knew he was looking for some kind of molecular pathway that would start with a light sensitive receptor and trigger an elevated level of calcium ions in the melanocytes.

It seemed possible that a TRP ion channel would be involved because TRPs are involved in phototransduction elsewhere in the body that lead to an increase in intracellular calcium. There are, however, many types of TRP channels, and the molecular identity of the UVA-activated channel in melanocytes was not apparent. Oancea confessed that she even suspected another as the culprit. But many experiments later, the team hit on TRPA1 and amassed considerable evidence to confirm its vital role.

In one experiment, for example, they treated melanocytes with "antagonist" chemicals known to block TRPA1 activity. They then exposed the cells to UVA light and measured the resulting electrical response. The cells blocked with the antagonists had 80 to 90 percent reduction in current compared to the unhindered cells.

They used a similar technique of specifically blocking TRPA1 activity to show that the ion channel contributes greatly to the presence of calcium ions after UVA exposure compared to unhindered melanocyte cells. They also found melanocytes produce little or no melanin following exposure to UVA when TRPA1 is blocked.

They did not, however, do experiments to see whether adding TRPA1 stimulating substances could increase melanin production.

Slow Cooker Chicken Enchilada Soup | Picky Palate

I go in these crazy crock pot cooking phases where I use it all the time and I am loving it right now.? Last week I whipped up a giant pot of my Slow Cooker Chicken Enchilada Soup.? It?s warm, thick and complete comfort food in a bowl.

If you are having guests over, this is a great recipe to have.? It serves 12-16 and makes the best leftovers.? I enjoyed it for lunch for a few days and was happy as a clam :)

You can easily split the recipe if you don?t need to make such a massive amount, but I?ll warn you, it?s incredibly delicious and you?ll want the leftovers.

Let?s take a look at what you?ll need.

Here?s what you?ll need.? Remove one of those chicken broth cartons.? I only used one and the cheese and cilantro are just for garnishing, so you won?t need as much in the picture :)

Dice a large onion.

Cook them in a large skillet over medium heat.

Add some garlic.

Transfer right to a LARGE crock pot.? I?m talking at least a 5 quart.

I used one whole rotisserie chicken for this recipe.? Discard the skin then shred the meat.? It?s about 4 cups if you want to bake your own chicken.

Transfer the chicken pieces to the crock pot.

Add your chicken broth, 32 ounces please.

Pour in two 28 ounce size cans of green enchilada sauce and two 10 ounce size Rotel diced tomatoes.? Make sure both say MILD on the can.

I added two packages of cooked Spanish rice.? It thickened the soup so nicely, I definitely recommend it.? I used the Knorr Brand, but any of your favorite Spanish Rice will do.? If you?d like to make your own, use 4 cups.? I have a great Homemade Spanish Rice recipe HERE if you need one.? Scroll down past the tacos and you?ll see it.

Add a good handful of cumin and 8 ounces of sour cream.? Stir and let cook on low for 4-8 hours.

Slow Cooker Chicken Enchilada Soup 2t Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 1 rotisserie chicken, about 4 cups shredded (no skin)
  • 32 ounces reduced sodium chicken broth
  • Two 28 ounce cans mild green enchilada sauce
  • Two 10 ounce cans Mild Rotel diced tomatoes with peppers
  • 4 cups cooked spanish rice (I used 2 packages of Knorr Fiesta Rice)
  • 3 tablespoons ground cumin
  • 8 ounces sour cream
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese for topping
  • 1 bunch fresh cilantro leaves for topping
  • 1 bag tortilla chips for topping

Directions

  1. Heat oil in large skillet or pot over medium heat. Add onions and cook, stirring for 5 minutes until softened. Stir in garlic and cook for an additional minute. Transfer to a large 5 quart minimum crock pot with setting on low.
  2. Add shredded chicken to crock pot along with chicken broth, enchilada sauce, tomatoes, rice, cumin and sour cream. Stir and let cook on low for 4-6 hours

Float in inaugural parade to highlight unique Gullah Geechee culture

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Reuters) - A unique culture maintained by African slave descendants along the U.S. southeastern Atlantic coast will be featured with a float in the presidential inaugural parade on Monday, a proud moment for a group once reticent to promote its heritage.

To nab a spot in the festivities for President Barack Obama along Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, those working to preserve the Gullah Geechee culture highlighted its ties to First Lady Michelle Obama's family roots.

Her great-great-grandfather Jim Robinson, who was born around 1850 - and likely into slavery - lived and worked at a rice plantation near Georgetown, South Carolina, said Michael Allen, a community partnership specialist with the National Park Service in South Carolina.

That area falls within the park service's Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, a federally-funded project looking to protect the culture and its people along more than 12,000 square miles of barrier islands and coastal areas that span North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

Allen, coordinator for the project, said the National Park Service has identified about 1,000 sites connected to Gullah history and way of life that could be included in the corridor and spotlighted for tourists with signs, maps and brochures.

It is the only one of the country's 49 National Heritage Areas dedicated to the living culture of an African-American population, said Ron Daise, chairman of the commission that completed the corridor management plan last fall.

The Gullah Geechee heritage, which includes a distinctive language, has not always been acknowledged or embraced by some of the surviving slave descendants.

"As I was growing up and even until very recently, 'Gullah' and 'Geechee' were fighting words," said Daise, who was raised in a Gullah community on St. Helena Island, South Carolina.

"Among those who were white, or even people within our own community, those words were used to identify ignorance or a close association with anything that was African or tribal," he said. "These were people who ate a lot of rice and who spoke funny. We just said we were 'sea islanders.'"

ISOLATION KEPT CULTURE ALIVE

The terms "Gullah" and "Geechee," which are interchangeable, derive from West African tribal names, according to scholars.

Slaves from the rice-producing West African coast are credited with bringing the rice engineering and growing skills that made South Carolina a rich exporter of the crop in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Their African culture survived because of isolation, Daise said. Many of the rice plantations were located on islands with no bridges connecting those communities to the continental United States until the mid-1900s.

"The African culture continued and it was sustained for generations - in the language, food ways, religious beliefs and practices," he said.

Lorenzo Dow Turner, a scholar and professor at Howard and Fisk universities, first recorded Gullah speakers in the 1930s and identified their unique language that mixes African and English words.

Racial prejudice from outsiders, as well as a desire by Gullah parents for their children to speak standard English in order to succeed, drastically reduced the number of Gullah speakers over time, Daise said.

But during the past few decades, he said that shame has been replaced by a growing pride as Gullah culture has become more widely known and appreciated.

Corridor planners had applied for a spot in President Obama's first inaugural parade in 2009, but were not accepted, Allen said.

"This time, we did a better job of connecting the First Lady to the corridor," said Allen, who will ride on the float on Monday with corridor commissioners and their families.

"I could never have imagined that I would find myself in the inauguration parade of the president of the United States and that his wife would be of the (Gullah) culture," he added.

Michelle Obama's great-grandfather and grandfather also had ties to South Carolina, according to her family history.

The float will display sweetgrass baskets, which have been woven in the South Carolina Lowcountry for generations and are almost identical to baskets made in Sierra Leone, as well as story quilts and a bottle tree made by Gullah people to ward off evil spirits, Daise said.

Being on the national stage for its first inaugural parade allows the commission to share its effort to increase awareness of the Gullah Geechee culture, promote land preservation and support heritage-related economic development to sustain the people.

According to Daise, Gullah families have been displaced and remain threatened by development of prized coastal property, higher property taxes and lack of access to the waterways for traditional fishing, shrimping, oystering and crabbing.

Some of the Gullah burial sites have also been lost or paved over and traditional roadside basket stands have been moved as streets are widened.

"When the country comes to us, the onus is on Gullah people within the communities to tell our story, or as we say, ?tellin' we story,'" Daise said.

10 Reasons I Knew He Was the One | Black and Married With Kids ...

Because we run a large marriage and parenting site and we produce movies on marriage, people want to know our story. ?They want to know how we met and ?when did we know that we had ?the one.? ?Of course, our answers are different, as we?ve had different?journeys that led us to each other.

Lamar and I were engaged after dating for 11 months. ?He planned a very romantic proposal for me. ?He wanted to take me for a walk along a beautiful waterfront that had walking paths and benches in order to propose to me there. ?But on the day of the proposal, I was not agreeable. ?I would not get out of the car. ?I was tired, it was cold, and I just wanted to go home and chill. ?So, we went back to his place to chill. ?He put the ring on a necklace and as we lay down watching a movie, I discovered the ring. I don?t even think he asked me to marry him. ?I just jumped up, grabbed the ring and said: ?Yes, ?Yes, Yes, Yes??

But what made me so sure? My the last relationship was not good ( to put it mildly.) ?I spent a very long time in a relationship that was not good for me. And although everyone else could see that it was not good, I could not. ? So how could I trust my judgement now? ?How could I let my wall down and trust Lamar? ?Why was I so confident that I was making that right decision with Lamar?

Surrey Public Library Events for Families This Month ? Vancouver ...

Browsing the City of Surrey event listings I found my way to the Surrey Public Library?s website and began to look around. Easily 20 minutes had passed and I hadn?t even made it through all of the event categories listed on the sidebar. From games nights to crafts and cookies, Surrey Public Libraries offer a wide variety of free activities for all ages. Here are just a few that caught my eye for this month:

    Family Games Nights

A staple of any get-together in my family has always been board games, card games, drawing games, acting games ? well, you get the picture. Although they bring out a competitive streak and elevate the volume of the entire household, they are great for a challenge, for bonding in teams, and for simply having some good clean fun. Maximize Your Business With Great Website ... - Maynas Eric

Many people are discovering ways to increase their income these days, and one way is through the use of Internet marketing. The most difficult part of this method is finding how to get started with Online marketing. The following article contains great tips you can use to help you with Affiliate marketing.

Place rich, descriptive words within your site. Adjectives and adverbs can be great tools to use in order to pique the interest of your audience. Come up with your descriptive adjectives and try to be as clever as possible. Make your readers want to come back and hear more of your thoughts.

If you utilize regular emails to your customers, make sure you?re rotating the links that you include within those emails. Anything that is the same will only lead to your customers ignoring the information you are trying to present to them. The person who receives your email needs to be captivated by it to continue to keep reading, so keep things exciting and original.

TIP! You should spend enough time to at least learn a little about web design. There is a wealth of information on the Internet to help you learn CSS, HTML, and other web design specifics.

Your site?s purpose is identified by the tag above it, so choose it carefully. Located atop the web browser?s window, these tags play a large role in the initial impression made by your website. If you say something stupid, confuse readers, or don?t have an authentic message, you won?t make as many sales.

Direct marketing can also work if you know who to target and what they are looking for. Use a variety of methods, such as e-mail, fax or phone, to keep in touch with your customers and let them know about promotions. You may find their contact information in the phone book or online, but it?s even better if they have trusted you with their numbers so they will not feel like you are spamming them.

If you are using AJAX or Flash, do not use it very much. Flashy graphics may look attractive and catch the visitor?s eye, but it will not make you more visible to search engines. Flash is unnecessary for SEO purposes, and a successful Internet site can engage customers without it.

TIP! Consider what a customer would think of your web page when you are reviewing it. Is it truly user-friendly? Is the content enjoyable and interesting? Is an efficient and effective ordering system in place? It is a huge waste of time to put effort into search engine optimization, only to discover that people don?t like your site.

Creating and sharing a viral video with tags is going to help you with Website marketing success. Within the video?s description, be sure to include a link to your website. This will bring a lot of traffic your way.

When writing content, use simple and plain language to make your points or describe your products. Actually using the word ?easy? in your content will get you some added attention. Simplicity will always win out over complexity. So, cater to the basic human desire for easy over hard by using phrases that show just how easy it is to use your product or service. This is an easy way to boost your business.

A friendly looking 500 error page can be very helpful. This occurs when the website?s code is malfunctioning and not working properly. Genetic error messages just display a message that the connection timed out. Instead, inform your visitors that you are working on a fix to their problem using a more creative webpage message that fits the format of your site.

TIP! When writing content, use simple and plain language to make your points or describe your products. Actually using the word ?easy? in your content will get you some added attention.

Emailing a catalog or a flyer with links for similar products is a good followup to customers who buy products or services from you. As an illustrative instance, if your site sells shoes and a customer purchases a pair of boots, provide them with links to the other boots you offer. The more personalized you make your offerings, linking to things they bought before, the better your sales.

Make sure you use offer customers a guarantee, it is a surefire way to increase your success. A guarantee will let people know that they can trust in your company and your products. A guarantee makes people feel confident about trying a new product.

Look for feedback and comments from every part and place in your website and business design. This plays a role in how successful your business is. Get feedback from anyone you can, friends, family and potential clients. Take advice into consideration and make changes as you deem necessary.

TIP! Start small when launching a new website to introduce your offerings. A search engine might overlook a site with too many indexed pages; while limiting your indexed pages could make you more visible with regards to the search engines.

Internet marketers who are successful are optimistic about the products they?re selling and have a positive outlook. Demonstrate to prospective clients how much you personally enjoy the products you sell, and prove that you value your business. If everything sounds great, they will be just as enthusiastic as you are. This will generate more sales and more profits for you.

Think of a free service you can offer your visitors. People will visit just to take advantage of the free offer and they may stick around for a while if the site catches their eye. A good incentive for a finance web site is a free calculator for tax returns.

To compete with today?s type of affiliate marketing, you need to open a social media profile on popular sites. Be sure to take care when sending unwanted emails, as MySpace has been taking notice and have filed lawsuits against those they claim harass others.

TIP! A personal touch can go quite a long way in an ad campaign. Make sure your website has a picture of you, and include your name throughout your advertising.

With the ideas and inspiration from this article, you should be better prepared to start designing and implementing your online marketing strategy. Steel yourself for success by setting goals for both the short and long run. If you set goals and constantly learn and apply new information, you should see success through Internet promotion, before you know it.

'Fiscal Cliff' Deal Favors Housing Recovery

The housing market is on firmer ground today, as two major tax provisions survived the "fiscal cliff." Congress did not touch the mortgage interest deduction, and it extended tax relief for one year on mortgage debt forgiveness.

"An extension of the tax break is positive for home values by reducing the number of foreclosures and helping more troubled borrowers stay in their homes," wrote Jaret Seiberg of Guggenheim Partners. "That means less supply on the market."

Under a law signed in 2007, debt relief on loan modifications, short sales, and foreclosures were no longer taxable; that break expired at the end of 2012. The fear was that if the tax break was not extended, home owners would not agree to short sales (when the home is sold for less than the value of the mortgage) because they would then face a tax bill. They would also not agree to principal reduction loan modifications, which have proven to be far more successful than other modifications that leave the principal balance as is.

Under the $25 billion mortgage servicing settlement, borrowers have received $6.3 billion in mortgage principal relief through September, according to the settlement's monitor, Joseph A. Smith, Jr. The average loan balance reduction, $150,000. Banks completed 13,351 principal reduction loan modifications in November alone, according to Amherst Securities Group, a 62 percent jump from September.

Short sales also surged toward the end of the year, thanks to streamlined procedures and a more aggressive stance by the big banks, again in part due to the mortgage servicing settlement. More than 98 thousand short sales were completed in the third quarter of 2012, according to RealtyTrac.

Ahead: Retail sector must 'evolve, adapt' in '13 | News is my Business

Looking ahead logo NIMB 2013While much has been said about ?economic uncertainty? and ?consumer confidence,? the fact is that Puerto Rico?s economy has been in a state of disarray for so long it has become the new normal. So says Francis Gonz?lez, vice president of property management for DDR Corp., owners of 15 shopping centers islandwide.

?This is not the first time and economist foretell it won?t?be the last. However, retail on the island has always?shown to be resilient and the ability to hold its ground by weathering? and overcoming challenging times,? the executive said. ?I remain optimistic and look forward to the challenge and opportunities this new year may bring.?

Saying it is ?too early to tell? how retail will perform in 2013, Gonz?lez said ?as with every new year, we can anticipate challenges and opportunities. I believe that success hinges upon the ability to evolve and adapt to changing market needs.?

?Thus retailers able to improve the shopping experience of their customers by focusing on customer service, maintaining healthy inventory levels to meet their demand for goods at a competitive price point will succeed,? said Gonz?lez.

In line with that thought, DDR expects the ambitious $50 million redevelopment of its Plaza del Sol and Rexville Plaza in Bayamon, Plaza del Norte in Hatillo and Plaza Escorial in Carolina malls will ?provide a platform for our merchants to engage effectively with our shoppers, improves the shopping experience for our shoppers and solidifies the centers market leading position? in 2013.

Keeping existing retailers happy and attracting new ones seems to be the key strategies behind this year?s projected growth at Plaza Las Am?ricas in Hato Rey and Plaza del Caribe in Ponce, owned by Empresas Fonalledas.

?We expect moderate growth in both properties, as we are doing better in both malls and we?ll be seeing the results of many years of negotiations with retailers,? said Rafael Ruiz-Comas, director of corporate leasing for Empresas Fonalledas.

In the case of Plaza Las Am?ricas, the mall will usher in The Cheesecake Factory restaurant and other retailers Ruiz-Comas refrained from disclosing, as well as complete the expansion of the south side multi-level parking facility.

Plaza del Caribe will usher in new tenants this year, including Longhorn Steakhouse.

Plaza del Caribe will usher in new tenants this year, including Longhorn Steakhouse.

Over in Ponce, Plaza del Caribe is preparing for the upcoming opening of PF Changs, Longhorn Steakhouse and other retailers as as result of its $3.5 million food court makeover project announced last summer.

?We?re expecting moderate growth because we?re investing in our properties,? Ruiz-Comas said.

Car sales to grow about 9% this year
While not part of the retail segment, Puerto Rico car sales are expected to continue improving this year, when executives expect a 9 percent growth.

?We don?t see any reason why our predictions shouldn?t come to fruition, even though the first few months of the year could be slower than 2012,? said Jos? Ordeix, president of the United Automobile Importers Group, known as GUIA, which represents more than 96 percent of total vehicle sales in Puerto Rico.

?A slowdown is normal because of the change in administration and new players coming into different government entities,? he said. ?However, we?re optimistic there will be economic improvement that will not set back car sales volumes.?

The GUIA executive said Puerto Rico car sales should reach about 120,000 units in 2013, up from the 102,000 that were expected to roll off the lots in 2012.

Ordeix predicted that consumer preference will remain centered on the more fuel efficient and less expensive sub-compact, compact sedans and compact SUVs, while hybrid and electric vehicles should see better acceptance in 2013 as a result of ongoing government incentives.

'Revolutionary' banana slicer target of snarky Amazon reviews

    seabeetow4u/Amazon

"I tried using the slicer as an ornament as suggested, but unfortunately it didn't stay on the tree long," writes Amazon user seabeetow4u.

    By Helen A.S. Popkin

With 635 five-star reviews on its Amazon product page (out of more than 1,200 reviews ... and growing), it seems obvious that the Hutzler 571 Banana Slicer is the one gift you can buy yourself that will make up for all that thoughtless junk you've already re-gifted to friends and loved ones. Those who apparently did receive this "revolutionary" product over the holiday season are burning up the Amazon reviews as 2012 draws to a close.?

Just read what these satisfied reviewers have to say over this demarcated banana shape that is "dishwasher safe" and "faster, safer than using a knife."

"No more winning for you, Mr. Banana!" declares the review voted "most helpful" by other Amazon's users. "For decades I have been trying to come up with an ideal way to slice a banana," writes Amazon reviewer SW3K. "'Use a knife!' ?they say. Well ... my parole officer won't allow me to be around knives. 'Shoot it with a gun!' Background check ... HELLO! I had to resort to carefully attempt to slice those bananas with my bare hands. 99.9 percent of the time, I would get so frustrated that I just ended up squishing the fruit in my hands and throwing it against the wall in anger. Then, after a fit of banana-induced rage, my parole officer introduced me to this kitchen marvel and my life was changed."?

But it's not just felons who find the?Hutzler 571?indispensable.

    The Hutzler 571 Banana Slicer.

"Saved my marriage," raves Mrs. Toledo.?"What can I say about the 571B Banana Slicer that hasn't already been said about the wheel, penicillin or the iPhone..."

In "a military endorsement," Happy Hubby writes, "I have served in the U.S. Army for over 12 years. I can say that there is technology being used by the military that is rarely seen in the civilian sector." He does, however, caution, "this is a CIVILIAN model and not designed for field use!"

There are those who do not agree with the raves, however.?

"Angle is wrong," writes?J. Anderson in one of the 91 two-star reviews. "As shown in the picture, the slicer is curved from left to right. All of my bananas are bent the other way."?

Another reviewer points out that taking one's country of residence into account is important before making this purchase. "I?live in Australia and need a Region 4 slicer," writes Paul Anthony F. Brown. "I now have a whole bunch of bananas sitting on my kitchen counter that I can't slice and a life slightly more woeful and abject than it was before I received the slicer."

Still not sure??Check out the informative Customer Questions to find answers as to whether buying the warranty for the Hutzler 571 Banana Slicer is a wise move, if the product comes in metric and how well it might work on hot dogs.

With its first glowing review posted in 2007, it seems the Hutzler 571 Banana Slicer is enjoying a fresh surge of popularity in December, with new reviews piling up daily. This must be one seriously useful product ? either that or Internet culture blogger types have just (re)discovered yet another example of satirical Amazon reviews in the proud vein of Three Wolf Moon and the BIC's for Her Ballpoint Pen.?

But at the bargain price of $2.51?
