Gingrich says Romney 'is clearly the front-runner'

(AP) ? Newt Gingrich is acknowledging what has become increasingly clear: Mitt Romney is the likely GOP presidential nominee.

The former House speaker told Milwaukee radio station WTMJ Friday he thinks Romney "is clearly the front-runner." Gingrich said Romney "will probably" get the 1,144 convention delegates he needs to win the nomination, but added that Romney still has to earn it.

Gingrich has refused to leave the race. He said earlier this week that he would continue to campaign until Romney gets those delegates.

Gingrich's comments Friday were a turnaround from what he said after Romney's third-place finish in the GOP primaries in Alabama and Mississippi on March 13. Gingrich said then: "If you're the front-runner and you keep coming in third, you're not much of a front-runner."

Japan to lift entry ban on nuclear no-go zones

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Japan said on Friday it would lift entry bans on some cities in Fukushima prefecture that had been designated no-go zones due to their proximity to a nuclear power plant crippled by a powerful earthquake and tsunami last March.

After the natural disasters triggered the worst atomic accident since Chernobyl by causing nuclear fuel meltdowns at the Daiichi power plant in Fukushima, 160 miles (240km) northeast of Tokyo, the government evacuated a 12 mile (20 km) radius of the complex, in which around 80,000 people lived.

"We have decided to revise the restriction bans placed on the evacuation areas," Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said at a nuclear disaster task force meeting.

From April, the government will lift entry bans on Tamura, Minami Soma and Kawauchi, three of the 11 cities and towns that fall within or straddle the 20 km radius.

This follows their declaration in December that the Daiichi plant was in cold shutdown and under control after months of cleanup efforts, signaling it was ready to move to a longer-term phase to eventually decommission the plant.

After lifting the entry bans, the government will separate parts of Tamura, Minami Soma and Kawauchi into three categories, depending on radiation levels.

The government hopes that lifting the entry bans will speed up decontamination by allowing freer access.

In areas where annual radiation measurements are below 20 millisieverts per year, a government safety guideline, residents will have free access to their homes during the day and will be allowed to return permanently at the earliest opportunity post-decontamination.

Where readings are between 20 to 50 millisieverts annually, evacuees will also have unrestricted access during the day although their permanent return will come later.

In areas where measurements top 50 millisieverts, residents will not have free access and they will not be allowed to return for a minimum of five years.

The government is still in talks with the remaining eight cities over lifting the ban.

Even if residents are allowed to eventually return they will continue to live under the shadow of the devastated Daiichi plant, where it's a huge and costly cleanup is expected to take several decades.

Experts at a symposium in San Francisco marking the anniversary of the catastrophe said public radiation exposures have been less than what people were exposed to in the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster a quarter century ago, according to a report on news website, Environmental Protection.

Speakers at the University of California symposium said monitoring of children living just outside the evacuated zone points to higher than background levels of exposure, but not to unsafe levels, it reported. However, there is uncertainty about harms that may arise due to ingestion of short-lived radioactive iodine in the immediate aftermath of the reactor meltdowns.

Reuters and msnbc.com staff conributed to this report.

Policy On High-Risk Biological Research Tightened

The Obama administration has announced a new policy to handle the risks posed by legitimate biological research that could, in the wrong hands, threaten the public.

The move comes in response to a huge debate over recent experiments on bird flu virus that got funding from the National Institutes of Health. Critics say the work created mutant viruses that could potentially be dangerous for people, or give terrorists a road map for making a bioweapon.

A committee that advises the government, the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB), is again meeting Friday to discuss those flu studies. Late last year, it recommended keeping some details secret. But a panel of experts, including flu virologists assembled by the World Health Organization, called for full publication.

The new policy is aimed at preventing this kind of controversy from happening in the future. It covers federally funded research ? both ongoing work and future proposals. And it calls for special reviews of work that involves a list of 15 particularly nasty pathogens and toxins, including highly pathogenic bird flu virus, anthrax and Ebola.

Funding agencies will have to evaluate certain kinds of experiments to see if they pose special risks. The idea is "to really upfront ask the questions: Should they be done? And if so, under what conditions should they be done," explains Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the NIH.

If an agency wants to fund an experiment that might yield potentially dangerous information, Fauci says, scientists could be asked to hold back on publishing details in order to receive funding.

Or, in some cases, the work might need to be classified. Fauci notes that the NIH does not do classified studies. "We would have to refer it to an agency that does classified research, because we don't," he says.

He says the NIH has already taken a look at the ongoing projects it has funded and believes very few will need more scrutiny under the new policy.

"We're not talking about a very large number of studies that are going to get looked at again and might be altered," Fauci says. "We are talking about really, really a little bit more than a handful of studies among hundreds of grants."

And so far, he says, it doesn't look like even these raise significant concerns.

The new policy was welcomed by Richard Ebright, a chemistry professor at Rutgers University who has long called for better control of biological research that could be misused.

"My first reaction was that this is an important step forward ? an overdue step, but an important one," Ebright says.

He notes that a high-profile panel of experts recommended that the government set up a comprehensive oversight system back in 2004. "It was widely expected that a policy would be developed and announced perhaps in 2004, perhaps in 2005," Ebright says. "We're seeing it now perhaps six years late."

The policy will apply to government agencies ranging from the NIH to the Department of Agriculture to the Department of Homeland Security, he notes. He thinks this policy could prevent another controversy like the one currently swirling around bird flu experiments ? but only if agencies take real action.

"If the funding agencies propose only public relations or window dressing as risk mitigation," Ebright says, "then we'll have only public relations and window dressing, and more of these problems arising."

Meanwhile, it's still unclear what will happen with the bird flu studies and the fight over how much information to make public.

The NSABB will wrap up its second meeting on this issue Friday and is expected to again offer advice on whether to publish the full details. But its recommendations are not binding on the government, the scientists or science journals.

Ron Fouchier of Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands, one of the scientists who did the work, spoke earlier this week on a live webcast of a science show called This Week in Virology.

"Regardless of what the U.S. government and Dutch government say, the authors and the journals are going to have the last vote on the publication issue," Fouchier said.

Injured Football Players Look for Relief Through the Legal System ...

It's part of the game, right? Football players tackle each other, cheered on by their coaches and fans, including some of the most passionate in the sport here in New York. But at all levels of the game there is risk of injury, and limits on tackling are set by the rules of football and the principles of sportsmanship.

Now the National Football League is reeling from the discovery of an outrageous "pay-for-pain" bounty system used by the New Orleans Saints. The Saints apparently paid defensive players bonuses for taking out opponents with deliberately excessive, injury-causing hits.

The uproar over this manifestly unfair practice comes at a time when public awareness of the danger of sports concussions is rising. When the bounty scheme was exposed, almost 400 former players were already trying to sue the NFL for negligence, seeking to be compensated for head injuries they received while playing. In a previous case from 1973, a federal appellate court held that a football player can be held responsible for injuries that occur while playing if the act is done with "reckless disregard for the opponent's safety."

The injured players, like all current and former players, signed on to a collective bargaining agreement with the NFL that forbids them from filing lawsuits in court and dictates that they must use arbitration instead. The players, though, claim that the NFL lied to them about the medical consequences of multiple concussions.

The NFL's fraudulent behavior, they say, means the players are not bound by the agreement and can proceed with their lawsuits, just like other professional, collegiate or amateur athletes dealing with injuries caused by another's reckless actions. Now the existence of the pay-for-pain arrangement lends fuel to the pros' fire. Players who can show their injuries were caused by the unsportsmanlike big hits have extra leverage to use in arguing for the right to sue in court.

Kate Middleton delivers first speech, but media focus on blue dress (+video)

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, gave her first public speech at the Treehouse charity. But her sartorial selection was as big a story in Britain as her delivery.?

Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, made her first public speech as a royal Monday in Ipswich at the opening of a facility called the Treehouse, part of East Anglia?s Children?s Hospices.

The hospice is one of several British charities or non profit groups, including the Scouts and the National Gallery, that the Dutchess has identified as the focus of her attention. ?

British media praised her speech Monday, for which the Duchess used notes but which she delivered slowly and clearly.?

??The Duchess of Cambridge looked calm and confident as she gave her first public address today,? Daily Mail writer Rebecca English wrote. ?Kate[?s] three-minute speech was faultless -? made with a slow but measured delivery.?

?The Telegraph noted that the Duchess ?appear[ed] understandably nervous at first,? but that she ?delivered her maiden speech slowly and carefully, sticking precisely to her script, without any ad-libs.?

It was reported that she?penned the speech herself.?

The speech made headlines in some British newspapers, including the Daily Mail and the Telegraph, for the dress the Duchess wore to the event, which reporters noted is one she bought in 2008 and appeared to be the same one worn by her mother in 2010 when Carole Middleton went to Ascot. The British media has been fascinated by Kate Middleton's, and her sister Pippa's, fashion choices.?

?During the Duchess?s speech, she said she regretted the absence of her husband, Prince William, who is finishing military training in the Falkland Islands.

??What you have all achieved here is extraordinary," the Duchess said during her speech. "You as a community have built the Treehouse -- a group of people who have made every effort to support and help each other.?

?She noted the support the Treehouse and other East Anglia Children?s Hospices (EACH) facilities offer for families.

??For many this is a home from home?- a?lifeline?enabling families to live as normally as possible during a very precious?period of?time,? the Duchess said.

The Duchess is the royal patron of the Hospices, which helps families with children who have a life-endangering sickness. The organization provides therapy for the children, support for parents and family members and other services, offered at their centers or in the family?s home. The Treehouse will be the service center for Suffolk and Essex.

During her visit, she received a tour of the building and met children and their families who receive services from EACH, including 10-year-old Bethany Woods, who has been diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. Woods performed the song ?Rainbow Connection? for the Duchess, who congratulated Woods after her rendition, according to the Daily Mail.

?A reception was held for EACH staff members and those who have supported the organization. According to the Daily Mail, the Duchess told another person attending the reception, ?I find doing speeches nerve-wracking.?

?She also planted a tree at the facility in commemoration of her visit.

The Duchess has been the royal patron of EACH since January and is also a supporter of the Scouts organization, planning to attend camps with the Girl Scout troops in north Wales and London and assist with games. The royal family has traditionally been a supporter of the Scouts, and Queen Elizabeth serves as the association?s current president. The Duke of Kent, the queen?s cousin, is its patron.

?The Duchess also serves as a patron for the National Gallery, the organization Action Through Addiction, which helps those with a drug addiction and their loved ones, and the Art Room, a charity which attempts to help children?s self-image through art.

Tough start to swan song

Chipper Jones? final season isn?t getting off to the most promising start.

According to Mark Bowman of MLB.com, Jones will undergo arthroscopic surgery Monday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. Interestingly, Bowman hears that the 39-year-old third baseman suffered the injury running in the outfield Thursday just before he announced his intention to retire following the 2012 season.

Jones had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee last year and only missed around three weeks, so the hope is that he?ll be ready for the home opener against the Brewers on April 13.

Martin Prado is likely to fill in at third base during his absence while Eric Hinske and Matt Diaz figure to share playing time in left field.

Swiss federal court keeps FIFA-ISL document secret

(AP) ? Switzerland's supreme court says a document revealing which FIFA officials took kickbacks from World Cup marketing agency ISL can remain blocked from publication while the court studies the case.

The Swiss Federal Tribunal has granted a "suspensive effect" to parties identified only as "B2" and "B3" who appealed to stop publication.

The court says FIFA was "B1" but is no longer in the case.

The document details a May 2010 deal in which two soccer officials admitted taking kickbacks in the 1990s. They repaid the then $6.1 million on condition their identities would remain secret.

Five Swiss and British media organizations seeking access to the document won a state court ruling in December.

The federal court verdict is expected in several months.

All You Need To Know About Freelance Writing | Obvious Articles

Is writing your passion? Do you have a knack for making words come alive on a page? If this is your case, you might want to consider freelance writing to earn a good income from the comfort of your home. Freelance writers have the potential of earning good money and they never have to leave their own home to do it.

Freelance writers don?t specialize in one type of writing, but write anything and using any mean, from writing web content to e-books, to magazine articles.

Ready to get started?

Before you go looking for freelance jobs, you should build up a portfolio of articles. You can write for your own website or blog, offer to write free articles for friends, or contact your local paper about writing a column for them. Make sure you also prepare a list of references your new client can contact if they wish to check on things.

Where To Find Work

Finding a clientele is your next focus. You could start by going on some of the better known freelance websites such as elance, and bid on a project. It is also a good idea to set up a website that showcases some of your writing, tells a little about you and your area of expertise, and of course you will have your contact information on the site. Adding a blog to your site might be a good idea as well. A blog allows you to post articles and short writings to your site from time to time.

Try to find some work through networking. Think about friends, former colleagues, bosses and clients that would be interested in having some writing done and call them up. Once you have created a client base, do not forget to ask for referrals. Do you know someone that successfully freelances now? Ask for valuable advice on how you should get started, and see if it is possible for you to stick around them for a while. They might even be able to send you their overflow clients they can?t fit in a schedule. And if you are in the position of not being able to handle a project, make sure you also refer other freelancers.

Lots of magazines publish content that comes from freelancers. Create a list of editors and their contact information, so that you can pitch stories to them regularly. It can be tough to get a foot in the door with magazines, but once you start getting published it will become easier and in many cases more lucrative.

How much will you get paid?

The size and complexity of the project usually determine how much you will get paid for it. You could get paid as little as $5 for a small article that doesn?t require much effort, and several hundreds of dollars for more complex projects such as ebooks.

If you enjoy writing about many different subjects, freelance writing is likely to be a good fit for you. You can stay home and yet do something you absolutely love. Writing on a large variety of topics is going to help you become a successful freelancer, so you should take on assignments even if they are free. Get paper and pen, or fire up your computer, and then let the creative juices flow.

New analysis finds painting is a Van Gogh

X-rays have illuminated the origins of a disputed painting: This time, an old still life by Vincent van Gogh. Suggestions that the image was painted by Van Gogh had been dismissed in 2003, but new research now gives greater weight to the idea that the Dutch post-impressionist painter created the work.

The painting is about 40 inches (100 centimeters) by 30 inches (80 centimeters) and dates back to 1886. It shows a variety of flowers in a sea-foam green vase on a table, with another bouquet in front, and is titled "Still Life With Meadow Flowers." Beneath this still life, scientists discovered in 1998 another painting, one showing two men wrestling.

The authenticity of the painting has been in doubt since it arrived at the Kr?ller-M?ller Museum in the Netherlands in 1974.

The new analysis leaves "no doubt that the wrestlers and the flower still life were painted by Van Gogh," the museum said in a statement. "The flower piece will (now) be given a prominent position among other works by Vincent van Gogh in the museum's collection."

An odd painting
Doubters said that the painting's unusual size (larger than Van Gogh's typical flower paintings) and the odd signature (in the upper right corner, instead of the bottom right) weren't reminiscent of a true Van Gogh, and in 2003 the artist was labeled as anonymous. It wasn't until scientists got their hands on the painting that evidence began to mount that the work was by Vincent van Gogh.

Historians from the museum say the work's size was actually standard for figure paintings at the Art Academy at Antwerp, Belgium; and it was there that he painted the under-painting, a "figure painting."

An X-ray image of the painting in 1998 revealed two wrestlers grasping each other by the arms ? the original image Van Gogh painted while at the academy.

The over-painting is a still life of flowers, which Van Gogh painted in Paris later that year using the same canvas. He didn't bother to scrape off the old image or to even paint an intermediate layer: he painted right over it.

"The still life was painted in at least three stages with drying time in between, but the boundaries between the stages cannot be determined precisely," the museum told Reuters. "The upper part was painted first and from life, according to the flower season most likely at the beginning of June (1886) at the earliest."

Because of the under-painting, the researchers said, the artist also had to pay special attention to cover over the old images. Unlike Van Gogh's other Parisian flower paintings, this image has an extra bouquet in the foreground, covering the area of one man's torso.

Parisian pigments
The new work, using a technique called Macro Scanning X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry, or MA-XRF, helped the researchers analyze both the under-painting and the top layer of the work in much finer detail than the original scan. The X-rays don't harm the artwork, but data gathered from them give a detailed picture of individual paints and pigments, which reflect the rays back in different ways.

The new scan shows that the pigments used in the paintings were very similar to the pigments Van Gogh used in other paintings during the period. The detail was so fine that the painter's typical brush strokes are also visible, enabling the researchers to suggest that maybe it is a Van Gogh after all.

The new scan also showed that the male models in the original wrestling painting were posed half naked, which is characteristic of the academy in Antwerp, the museum said. Van Gogh wrote to his brother about painting the original while at school: "This week I painted a large thing with two nude torsos ? two wrestlers."

The analysis is published as "Rehabilitation of a flower still life in the Kr?ller-M?ller Museum and a lost Antwerp painting by Van Gogh," by the Kr?ller-M?ller Museum and is a pre-print of a full book, "Van Gogh: New Findings," available in June by WBooks.

Air Canada ground crews stage wildcat strike at Toronto's Pearson Airport

A wildcat strike by Air Canada ground workers created travel chaos at Pearson International Airport in Toronto this morning, leaving passengers stranded as dozens of flights were either delayed or cancelled.

By 7 a.m., more than 100 Air Canada flights into and out of Pearson had been affected.

Travellers were urged to check their flight status before heading to the airport.

A list of the flights affected is available on the airport website.

The ground workers walked off the job Thursday evening, leaving hundreds of passengers in limbo.

Many people had to leave flights already on the tarmac until management was able take over some baggage handling duties and allow the delayed flights to continue to their destination.

Shortly after the job action began, Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick said the job action involved ?a small number of ground handling employees? at Pearson.

But the walkout showed no sign of abating early Friday, with dozens of ground workers gathered outside the arrivals deck of Terminal One. Many cheered as colleagues arriving for the day shift chose to join the protest.

Soon after the job action began late Thursday, many passengers said they had no idea where their luggage was, or how they were going to get to their destinations. One passenger described the situation at the airport as ?a zoo.?

Another passenger, Aaron Huizing, was heading back to his home in Ottawa from Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic when the walkout began.

Huizing, who was travelling with a group of 30 people, said he never should have booked a vacation with the airline.

?I say the same thing every time. ?I?m never going to deal with Air Canada again.? Maybe next time I?ll listen to myself,? he said.

Other passengers were worried about what the job action will mean for their families.

?We?ve got people taking care of our kids back home who have to go to work in the morning,? said Ryan Tuck, who was also on a connecting flight from Los Angeles bound for Ottawa.

?I?m not too happy,? added Tuck. ?We?re getting mixed messages from Air Canada and we don?t even know where our luggage is or what to do next.?

There was no immediate sign that federal Labour Minister Lisa Raitt would intervene in the dispute.

A spokesperson Raitt?s office told The Canadian Press in an email that ?these issues fall with Air Canada internally.?

Should Air Canada feel the job action constitutes an illegal strike, the spokesperson said, ?they can bring this matter to the Canadian industrial Resolution Board.?

Earlier Thursday, angry Air Canada workers rallied in front of Prime Minister Stephen Harper?s constituency office in Calgary to send him what they called a symbolic message.

Air Canada has been plagued with labour troubles over the last year.

The airline and its pilots and mechanics have been in a bitter contract feud that prompted the federal government to recently step in with legislation banning strikes or lockouts at the airline.

Raitt had insisted the government had to act to protect the national economy.

Ottawa also had to intervene in contract disputes involving the airline?s flight attendants and its customer service agents.

Health, Nutrition and Easy Diet ? 9 Factors For Permanent Good ...

What is good health? Good health is a state of well being where optimum function in our body and good feeling is achieved. It is a place in our lives where we can achieve maximum productivity and functioning from our bodies and mind and where we feel most resistant to fatigue and disease.

To reach this state is not easy, I?m sorry to say. That?s why over 75% of Americans are not healthy in one way or another. It requires a lifelong program of health and wellness management brought on by the discipline of making the right choices of diet and exercise ? one day at a time. And it seems, according to my own experience that the older you get the more you need to curb the intake of foods.

However, with a good state of mind and understanding of the importance of a good disciplinary program it can be easier to achieve. How do we get to good health and stay there? Here are 9 important factors that will lead up to permanent good health:

1. Self-driven discipline.
2. A positive attitude.
3. Desire, effort and patience.
4. Good nutrition choices.
5. Exercise.
6. Changing poor habits into healthy ones.
7. Knowledge of our body
8. Education on the subject.
9. Continuous working on all the above

What is sickness and disease?

If good health is a state of well being where optimum function in our body and good feeling is achieved, then what is sickness? It is the opposite where the body does not function well, bringing about an ill-feeling of fatigue, disease, aches and pains. If you are sick, your body is not living in harmony with normal principles. Ailments and pains are not normal. Health is normal.

Sometimes disease symptoms can be remedial steps to the body?s restoration, such as vomiting, diarrhea, fever, coughing, sneezing, etc.. Often sickness can be an intense bodily purification process. The body always strives to purify itself of harm.

To help the body rid itself of toxins, we need to eat properly, providing our body foods in natural state, raw or steamed. Meats & eggs should be well done and unprocessed, unrefined and without additives. With the help of a health professional, we can undertake a herbal program for cleansing.

To stay healthy, we need to get enough vigorous exercise, breath pure air, drink lots of pure water, balance our days in 1/3 sleep, 1/3 work, 1/3 leisure, and keep our body clean internally and externally.

To help prevent sickness, we must be aware of what our bodies tell us at all times (how we look and feel), watch for our bodies? signs and signals such as, symptoms, feelings, sensations. These are often overlooked until it is too late. For example one highly common and overlooked unhealthy sign is constipation. Simple. Common. Yet most of us don?t take immediate corrective action. It is an indication of poor food habits. Not enough water, not enough fibre, etc. That?s when the #6 factor above comes in: Changing poor habits into healthy ones.

Many ailments and serious diseases are caused by this chronic problem alone. But we keep on living with it, taking harmful laxatives, until a critical medical situation such as colitis or crohn?s disease, etc., sends us to the doctor or the hospital. This is one of the first signs of bad eating habits. All that?s required is an immediate change in diet. Foods do make the difference.

Diseases can also be the result of external causes involved in daily living such as, polluted air, non-nutritional foods, devitalized foods, bad eating habits, unhealthy foods and drinks, lack of exercise, uncontrolled emotions, toxics and poisons in the body.

Borderline health and vague feelings are when we may not feel sick but we could feel better, more energetic and enthusiastic. Again these are usually linked to nutrient deficiencies. Some of the possible symptoms are digestive disturbances, leg cramps, canker sores, eye discomforts in bright lights, scaly skin, chronic pains, headaches, etc.

Continuous knowledge and education in each of these issues and staying the course on the 9 factors listed above will go a long way to take us to permanent health and well-being./dmh

ERIC BARTELS ? Blog Archive ? NLP: Machine Guns for ...

Posted: March 20th, 2012 | Author: Eric Bartels | Filed under: Stories | No Comments ?

The last couple of month I wrote a couple of Facebook entries about neuro linguistic programmering (NLP) here in the Netherlands. I am a trained NLP practioner, master en trainer myself, but increasingly I get an uneasy feeling about the way NLP is used and exploited here in the Netherlands. I read stories written by well known Dutch NLP trainers that not only lack intellectual coherency and congruency, but also show a shocking manipulation of others and a strong abuse of power. Furthermore, instead of treating NLP as a flexible toolbox, these trainers turn NLP into a church with rituals and different schools that discredit each other. These observations have made me realize that there is a fundamentally wrong assumption behind NLP. Let me explain.

Grinder and Bandler were both part of the counterculture in California in the sixties and seventies of the last century. This counterculture arose on both sides of the ocean, but was particular strong in the US due to the Vietnam war. This caused a strong antiestablishment sentiment in the US, that was strongest in California. Grinder and Bandler, but also Steve Jobs of Apple, were part of that culture. It made Steve grow a computer company to break the power of the IBM?s of this world and Grinder and Bandler to suck the genius out of three psychoanalysts to break the power of the psychoanalytical establishment. They called it NLP.

The NLP movement was based on the assumption that the world would be a better place of we could disconnect the skillset from the person, thus enabling every human being to become his or her own psychotherapist. And that is exactly what Grinder and Bandler did: they modelled the psychoanalytical genius in a toolbox so any human being can learn that in 2 times 11 days (NLP practitioner and NLP master practitioner).

There is a strong belief behind that thinking that nobody ever addresses.

The belief is that a human being is a set of skills sets. So if you isolate a certain skill set from a person and teach it to somebody else, the somebody else has the same qualifications as the original person. I think that assumption is simply wrong. To address that, I wrote in an article on a NLP forum that ?..NLP is great and powerful, but it is also like giving a box of machine guns to an bunch of fucking chimpanzees..?

To make it more practical, I believe that Milton Erickson was not only a great hypnotist because of the specific skill sets Grinder and Bandler distilled from Erickson, but because of something else. And that something else is ?intention? or the ?why? of behaviour. In the western world, thanks to theologian William of Ockam, philosopher Rene Descartes and biologist Charles Darwin, we have removed the why from our world. If you want a why, go to a church or believe in God. Without God, no why. So evolution is just an accident and life is only direct experience. Enjoy it, but don?t try to make any sense of it as it is senseless.

With his ?final cause? Greek philosopher Aristotle developed a framework in which why exists without a God. I think he is right and will be proven right. I have already written about that in other articles, so I will leave it here.

NLP is a toolbox that operates within the ?no-why? framework of Ockam-Descartes-Darwin: it works on the ?how? and ?what? in relationship with the ?where? (context). But it denies the why. Last week a NLP trainer visited me. He had done any NLP and hypnosis training you can ever imagine. But he was depressed and wanted me to help him. What he said did not surprise me: ?Eric, I know all this stuff, I can cure phobias and other stuff, hell, I have even left my family as they didn?t want me to do this kind of work, but?I still don?t know who I am and why I am here?? Now, of course, this is one person, but he is not the only one telling me this. Now we can tell these people that why is an illusion and they should stop looking, but to them it is real.

But this is not the most prominent point I would like to make.

The most prominent point I would like to make is that if there is no why, there also is no such thing as ethics and morality. There are only rules to govern our whyless how-what-where drive to survive and satisfy our egotistical needs. But that is not the same as ethics and morality, although often mistaken for it. Ethics and morality transcend egotistical need-satisfaction. They stretch out to the greater whole, the larger system. Throwing your garbage out of the car while driving serves your egotistical needs and is therefore in a whyless universe acceptable until a formal law says otherwise. In a why-universe it is not acceptable as it disturbs the larger context. Ethical and moral behaviour takes the larger context in consideration as every (organic) system plays a (why-)role in the grand scheme of things.

In a whyless universe we can take a skill set from person A, put it in person B and person B will then behave like person A. In a why-universe this is impossible as the intention or why of person A and person B differ and these system-intentions are not replicable. If you want to perform hypnosis like Milton Erickson does, you can learn and integrate his skill sets, but not his system-intention (the intention, why or motive of the system). System intentions are personal, already there and can be activated, but cannot be replicated.

The behavior of people is why (motive/intention) plus how (skillsets) plus what (behavior) plus where (context), as I try to explain in my books.

We in the West, especially in the US, believe we can export democracy. We really believe if people in Uganda of Afghanistan get free elections, their society will turn into a flourishing democracy and their civilians will turn into freedom-loving democrats. That is the same mistake in thinking that is used in NLP. It just doesn?t work that way. If human beings don?t have the right intention (why) with the accompanying ethics and morality, democracy for them will not work. They need an evolutionary development of the why to be able to live like a democrat.

That is why I wrote??..NLP is great and powerful, but it is also like giving a box of machine guns to an bunch of fucking chimpanzees..?. If you give machine-guns to biological entities that don?t have the sufficient developed intention, ethics and mortality, they will misuse it , manipulate and destroy. The same happens, in my observation, with NLP. Any idiot can follow a NLP training, regardless of his or her intention.

And I have met a lot of these idiots.

People who were computer-programmer, plumber, accountant, salesperson or florist, all turned into NLP coaches and trainers. People who were completely fucked up themselves, depressed, living on the streets, high on cocaine, booze,?all turned into NLP coaches and trainers.?Now I will not say these people cannot be great therapists of change agents, they can of course, but my point is there is no supervision, there is no emphasis on a certain intention. I must say I sometimes pity all the patients treated by these so called NLP coaches.

I have read entries on Facebook by NLP trainers, some of them locally famous and with large NLP institutions, that not only lack the intellectual capacity to form one intelligent and coherent sentence, but also show a scary use of manipulation and power. I must admit though, that most of these idiots are Bandler trained trainers. And this doesn?t surprise me as Bandlers work is much more based on manipulation (hypnosis) than Grinders work, who focusses more on states and self-help application of NLP.

NLP is part of a much larger crisis in the Western world that is in reality a transition from a typical how-driven survival-of-the-fittest industrial world to a why-driven world of meaning and purpose. NLP is a nice set of tools to be used by people with the right intention, ethics and morality within a larger why-framework dedicated to help people and companies find and activate their true why and grow that into a congruent and healthy existence.

Precisely what I try to achieve with The Plan Principle.
