Sinai militants say target of Israeli drone, four killed

ISMAILIA, Egypt (Reuters) - Four Islamist militants in Egypt's North Sinai were killed by an air strike that their comrades said on Saturday had been done by an Israeli drone but which state media said was the work of an Egyptian army helicopter.

Israel dismissed as "rumors and speculation" the idea that it had struck on Egyptian territory.

The neighboring countries have often cooperated in tackling the Islamist threat in Sinai and neither seemed interested in creating a fuss over this case. Egypt's armed forces officially denied Israel had launched the attack. Israel, while not giving any details on the incident, cast it as an Egyptian operation.

Five security sources had earlier told Reuters that Israel had carried out a missile strike that killed the militants as they prepared to launch rockets at Israel.

The Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis group said on a website: "Our heroes became martyrs during their jihadi duties against the Jews in a rocket attack on occupied lands."

The group said the attack was by an Israeli drone, but did not say how it knew that to be the case. It criticized the Egyptian military for what it called its repeated cooperation with Israel.

The state news agency quoted a security source as saying an Egyptian military helicopter killed the militants.

The Egyptian military said two explosions took place at a site 3 km (2 miles) west of the Israeli border and south of the city of Rafah on Friday afternoon.

One source said Israeli aircraft had observed the militants preparing three rocket launchpads to hit Israel. It launched a missile, killing two men, then killed another pair who stepped up to the launchpads after the first strike.

However, an Egyptian army spokesman denied in a subsequent statement any Israeli role in the incident.

In Jerusalem, Israeli military spokesmen declined comment and Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon dismissed what he described as "rumors and speculation" about the Sinai strike.

"The state of Israel respects the sovereignty of Egypt in its entirety," he said in a statement, adding that there was "stepped up activity by the Egyptian army recently, including this weekend, against the terrorist infrastructure in the Sinai peninsula". He did not offer any operational details.

Militants based mainly in North Sinai have escalated attacks on Egyptian security forces and other targets since July 3, when the army deposed Islamist President Mohammed Mursi.

The Sinai is largely demilitarized as part of the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty of 1979 but Israel has approved troop reinforcements to combat the militants and arms smuggling by Palestinians into Gaza.

The desert peninsula has long been a security headache for Egypt and its neighbors. Large and mostly uninhabited, it also borders the Palestinian-ruled Gaza Strip and the Suez Canal linking Asia to Europe. It is home to nomad clans disaffected with rule from Cairo.

The Egyptian army said on Wednesday it had killed 60 militants in the Sinai Peninsula in the month since President Mohamed Mursi's overthrow on July 3.

US wholesale stockpiles fell 0.2 percent in June

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. wholesalers cut their stockpiles in June for a third straight month even as their sales rose again. Businesses may need to speed up restocking if demand continues to increase, a trend that could boost economic growth in the second half of the year.

The Commerce Department said Friday that wholesale stockpiles fell 0.2 percent in June from May. That follows a 0.6 percent drop in May ? the biggest in 20 months ? a modest 0.1 percent decline in April.

Wholesalers haven't shrunk their stockpiles for three months or longer since September 2009, which was three months after the Great Recession ended. The decline shows that many remain cautious and are keeping inventories lean, despite three straight months of solid sales growth.

In June, sales at the wholesale level rose 0.4 percent. That followed a 1.5 percent increase in May and a 0.8 percent gain in April.

Stronger sales could lead to more restocking in the July-September quarter and drive more economic growth. Faster growth in stockpiles means companies are ordering more goods from U.S. factories.

The government reported last month that the economy grew at a lackluster 1.7 percent annual rate from April through June.

Economists expect the growth rate will be revised much higher after a report this week showed U.S. companies exported a record number of goods in June.

Jim O'Sullivan, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics, said he now expects overall economic growth will be revised up to a rate of around 2.3 percent.

Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors, said that some of the reduction in wholesale stockpiles might have been involuntary, as businesses underestimated sales demand and had to draw down stockpiles more than they had expected.

He said that with auto sales remaining strong, inventory gains should rise in the coming months and help support economic growth in the second half of the year.

In June, stockpiles at the wholesale level were $499.7 billion. That's up only 2.9 percent from a year ago but 29.3 percent higher than the recession low in 2009.

Auto stockpiles fell 1.5 percent in June from May, while inventories of metals such as steel declined 0.4 percent.

The sales gain was led by a 1.5 percent increase in furniture and a 0.5 percent rise in auto sales

Business and Pleasure Don't Mix on Facebook

When it comes to Facebook, most employees would rather not mix business with pleasure.

A new study from the staffing service OfficeTeam revealed that more than three-quarters of workers are uncomfortable being friended by a client or vendor on the social networking giant.

It's not just those people outside of the office that employees would prefer to avoid on Facebook. More than 60 percent of those surveyed don't want to be Facebook friends with a boss or someone they manage, while nearly half of employees aren't interested in having a personal relationship with their co-workers on social networks.

[5 Jobs Where Office Romances Blossom]

?Robert Hosking, executive director of OfficeTeam, said people have different comfort levels when it comes to social media, so it's best not to blanket colleagues with friend requests.

"Although some people are hesitant to reach out to business contacts via social networks, there can be a benefit to doing so ? if you approach it the right way."

OfficeTeam offers five tips to help employees determine if they should connect with co-workers on Facebook:

  • Follow the leader: Employees should let their boss or those more senior than them make the first move. Proactively sending a friend request could create an awkward situation.
  • Scope it out: Check out whether colleagues have other employees in their networks before asking them to connect. If their lists are limited to favorite work pals, they may not be eager to friend a wider group of co-workers.? ?
  • Ask first: When in doubt, ask individuals whether they would be interested in connecting on social media before sending an invite.
  • Do a self-check: Employees must review their profile and make sure there isn't anything posted that could damage their professional image. They may prefer that colleagues not see spring break photos, game updates or quiz results.
  • Don't give in to peer pressure: Employees aren't obligated to share social media updates with everyone in the office. If they're concerned about slighting people by turning down invites, they should accept friend requests but use privacy settings and lists to control who can view certain content.

The study was based on surveys of 1,000 senior managers are companies with 20 or more employees.

China fines 6 milk suppliers in price-fixing probe

BEIJING (AP) ? China announced Wednesday it has fined six milk suppliers, including Mead Johnson and New Zealand's Fonterra, a total of $108 million for price-fixing after an investigation that shook the country's fast-growing dairy market.

The announcement came as China reels from a separate recall of milk supplies from Fonterra this week due to possible contamination.

The investigation reflected intensifying government scrutiny of business practices under China's 5-year-old anti-monopoly law. Most targets so far have been foreign-owned. It was carried out against the backdrop of several Chinese probes of possible bribery, price-fixing and other misconduct by global suppliers of pharmaceuticals and other products.

The Cabinet's National Development and Reform Commission said it imposed fines totaling 668.7 million yuan ($108 million) on the local units of Mead Johnson Nutrition Co., based in Glenview, Illinois; Hong Kong-based Biostime International Holdings Ltd.; Dumex, a unit of France's Danone SA; Abbott Laboratories, in Abbott Park, Illinois; Fonterra Co-operative Group and Dutch-based FrieslandCampina NV.

The companies admitted they violated the anti-monopoly law by setting minimum prices distributors were required to charge, which raised costs for consumers, the NDRC said in a statement. Regulators did not allege direct collusion, known as horizontal price-fixing, among them.

Setting minimum prices is a common practice in some markets, where companies want to maintain an image as a premium brand. But lawyers say Chinese regulators appear to see most such requirements for distributors as illegal.

Beijing is especially concerned about consumer prices at a time when communist leaders face pressure to contain surging living costs.

Three suppliers were found to have violated the law but were spared fines, the NDRC statement said. They were China's Beingmate Group Ltd.; Wyeth Nutrition, a unit of Switzerland's Nestle SA, and Japan's Meiji Dairies Corp.

Milk quality is a sensitive issue in China after six babies died and thousands were sickened in 2008 due to formula tainted with the chemical melamine. That prompted many parents to switch to buying more expensive imported milk.

Thursday's announcement referred to suppliers of milk powder while earlier reports by state media said investigators specifically targeted sellers of powdered infant formula.

Milk suppliers including Nestle and Dutch-based FrieslandCampina announced price cuts of 5 to 12 percent after the investigation was launched.

Mead Johnson was fined 203.8 million yuan ($33 million), Biostime 162.9 million yuan ($26.3 million) and Dumex 172 million yuan ($27.7 million), according to the NDRC statement. FrieslandCampina was fined 48.2 million yuan ($7.8 million), Abbott 77.3 million yuan ($12.5 million) and Fonterra 4.5 million yuan ($720,000).

Some fines were based on companies' annual sales and ranged from 3 to 6 percent of revenue, the agency said.

There have been few court rulings so far on the 2008 anti-monopoly law. That has fed uncertainty about how it will apply to global companies that are eager to expand in the world's second-largest economy.

Chinese regulators have cited the law in ordering changes to acquisitions or business practices. In 2009, they blocked Coca-Cola Co. from buying a Chinese fruit juice producer.

Business groups welcomed the law as a step toward clarifying operating conditions in China. Since then, they have said it is enforced more actively against foreign companies than against their Chinese rivals.

Last week, a Shanghai court ordered U.S.-based health care giant Johnson & Johnson to pay damages to a distributor in a lawsuit filed under the anti-monopoly law. The court said J&J improperly set minimum prices, depriving the local distributor of possible sales.

Meanwhile, China has ordered a recall of Fonterra infant formula after the dairy company announced Saturday that hundreds of tons of infant formula, sports drinks and other products might be tainted with bacteria that could cause botulism.

Also last month, police detained four employees of GlaxoSmithKline on charges they bribed doctors to prescribe the British pharmaceutical giant's drugs.

Are You Selling the Wrong Product? by Keith Rosen

Become a better sales coach and sales manager today.

8-Steps to Creating a Coaching Culture by Keith RosenHere?s the visual. You?re in prospecting mode. Whether you?re about to walk into a place of business looking for new clients or pick up the phone to make a cold call or even a follow up call to a potentially ?warm? prospect, you are focused on making each effort count.

You know you have a great product and service. After several attempts (and no call backs from prior voice mails or emails that you left days ago) you?re getting frustrated. ?I don?t get it.? You begin to question your product and then yourself. ?I have a great product. Why don?t they just call me back? This product is tough to sell. What am I doing wrong??

Here?s the answer. You are selling the wrong product. That?s right! When prospecting, there?s a strong chance that you may be leading with wrong product.

If you think you are selling your actual product or service at this early stage in your selling efforts, consider this. At this point in your selling process, chances are the potential customer has not experienced your product or service yet. More specifically, you have not even had an opportunity to speak with the prospect. The only communication you?ve had with them has been the attempts you?ve made to connect with them through your emails and voice mails.

At this point, you haven?t spoken with them yet. If this is so, when calling on them, do they know:

- Who you are
- Your product
- Your service
- Your company
- Pricing
- Benefits
- Expected results
- The problems you solve

Tip from the Sales Coach: Your Product Is You

Master Your Language of Selling. Your voice is your product. Your voice mail or approach is your product. The language or verbiage you use when networking, the compelling words you use to describe the end result that your customers realize is your product.

Until your prospect has the opportunity to experience what your product or service can do for them first hand, the only thing they have been exposed to is you! Imagine if you put the same amount of time, research, attention to detail, care, and value into your voice mail as you do with your product.

If your voice mail is your prospect?s first exposure to what you have to offer, realize the impression they get from your voice mail equates to the value they can expect from your product. If you stumble through your voice mail and come across unprepared, ineffective and disorganized, imagine the perception that your prospect has formulated about your final deliverable.

To become a sales champion, it?s essential to invest as much time in developing your product and service offering, the knowledge you need to have when presenting it, and most important, ensuring that every message and communication to your prospects and customers are making the impact you need.

Cochrane adds to Canada's medal haul at World swimming championships

Saanich?s Ryan Cochrane added to his world medal total with bronze in the 800-metre freestyle event at the FINA World Championships on Wednesday.

Cochrane swam the race in seven minutes and 43.7 seconds, chasing down American Connor Jaeger in the final 100 metres to ensure his third straight world championship medal in the 800m.

China?s Sun Yang won gold in 7:41.36.

Cochrane, 24, grew up in the waters of Saanich Commonwealth Place, and previoulsy won silver at the 2011 Worlds in Shanghai, bronze in 2009 in Rome, bronze in the 1,500m of the 2008 Olympics and silver in the 1,500m 2012 Olympics.

Cochrane was agonizingly close to another medal when he was fourth to touch the wall in the 400m freestyle on Sunday, yet was just 0.1 of a second away from silver.

?The touches aren?t my friend this meet,? Cochrane said in Swimming Canada?s release.

?It was hard getting fourth place. It?s a frustrating place to be but at the world championships anything can happen.?

Cochrane still has the 1,500m to look forward to for Saturday.

?(It was a) very interesting race ? five guys in it all the way and it?s not that normal in the distance freestyle,? said Randy Bennett, head coach of the national team and Cochrane?s coach at the Victoria Academy of Swimming.

?It?s usually a two- or three-horse race but he could have been fifth ... to be aware that he had to go as hard as he did in the last 100 metres, we?ll take the medal and run with it but you always want a little bit more.?

The medal is Canada?s fifth overall at the championships, and second in swimming. University of Victoria?s Eric Hedlin won a silver medal in the five-km open water race earlier in the two-week event, which also features water polo, diving, synchronized swimming and a newly added high diving event.

?The field is getting faster and faster and I think one of the mistakes we made (in the 800m) is playing into everybody else?s race tactics,? Cochrane said.

Cochrane will seek a third straight year of podium finishes in the 1,500m freestyle event when heats begin Saturday. He has back-to-back world championships silver medals in that event.

BBC to reveal new 'Doctor Who' on Sunday in live show

LONDON (Reuters) - British public broadcaster the BBC will reveal the 12th actor to play the lead role in its long-running "Doctor Who" science-fiction television series in a special live broadcast on Sunday.

The half-hour show will feature an interview with the next Time Lord, who travels through space and time battling all manner of malevolent monsters, ranging from new computer-enhanced horrors to the now decidedly creaky-looking Daleks, survivors of the early shows from nearly half a century ago.

"The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who's taking over the Tardis," executive producer of the TV series, Steven Moffat, said in a BBC statement on Friday.

Actor Matt Smith, who has played the role since 2010, said in June he would be bowing out in this year's Christmas special.

His announcement sparked speculation about who might take over, with actors Peter Capaldi, Ben Daniels, Rory Kinnear and Ben Whishaw among the bookies' favorites.

"Amongst all the speculation and betting, there has been lots of fun and intrigue at work as we've been using the codename Houdini as a decoy," said BBC drama controller Ben Stephenson.

"It's the biggest secret in showbiz - even those working with the new Doctor on other projects at the moment have no idea they are in the presence of the 12th incarnation."

The series will mark its 50th anniversary in November with a special episode that will see the return of some old faces, including David Tennant and Billie Piper.

"Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor" will be on BBC One at 1800 GMT on August 4 and simulcast on BBC America.

Facebook page urges cleanup of Northern Pulp

Cleaning up Northern Pulp

Northern Pulp's wastewater treatment centre at Boat Harbour, with aerators that help bring oxygen back in to the water.

BOAT HARBOUR ? It?s a decades-old issue that just won?t go away, much like the odorous smell from Northern Pulp that lingers in Boat Harbour.

The timeless question of what can be done about the unknown health issues and odours from the mill while ensuring economic sustainability is being taken up by a new group through their Facebook group titled ?Clean up the Pictou County Pulp Mill.?

It was started about a week ago and since then it?s amassed almost 1,700 members and counting. The idea for the group came from people who feel the mill has negatively affected their family?s health: Paul Gregory and Matt Gunning.

?We?d always talk about the mill and the uneasy feeling about it,? said Gunning, a Lyons Brook resident all his life. ?We?ve all kind of been hit with cancer so it makes you think.?

Gregory, who lives in Ottawa has worked in environmental affairs with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. He wished that it were better circumstances that brought him home to Pictou.

?My mom was diagnosed with cancer, a brain tumour,? said Gregory. ?She?s currently in palliative care.?

According to the Facebook group, the goal of this group is to create awareness and share information and stories about living around the bleached kraft pulp mill, located at Abercrombie Point, Pictou County, and its waste treatment facility Boat Harbour.

?We don?t advocate for the closing of the mill,? said Gregory. ?Obviously there needs to be a balance of economic and environmental concerns.?

Gunning and Gregory feel that the technology exists to make the mill operate cleaner and that a cleanup of Boat Harbour is long overdue.

?People who live here currently, people who?ve left and those who?d like to retire here don?t want to have an environment like this in Pictou County,? said Gregory.

The number of health stories posted has the group advocating for a full epidemiological study of the region and what role, if any, the mill has and is playing in Pictou County residents? health.

?The mill has been listed as a health factor in various studies done in Pictou County,? said Gunning. ?We want a study that will conclude once and for all the effects of living near the mill.?

Back in 1989, Dr. Daniel Reid, chief of staff at Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital in Pictou, concluded that the air emissions from the Scott pulp mill, now Northern Pulp, were the reason for the ?statistically significant incidence of respiratory illness? in the Pictou hospital.

The 2008 health status profile released by the Pictou County Health Authority noted that the county had the highest rates of chronic respiratory disease and other respiratory disease in Nova Scotia.

?You?d have to be na?ve to not see the connection,? said Gregory.

But not all are convinced the mill is as harmful as it?s made out to be.

Don Breen, a manager at Northern Pulp, said the mill?s huge, white smoke plumes look more menacing than they really are.

?The mill has several wet scrubbers used to scrub air emissions out of the flue gas,? said Breen. ?Also contained would be sulfur components (total reduced sulphur), particulate matter (salt, wood particles and lime) and other minor components similar to other kraft mills world wide.?

The Facebook group has indirectly stated that cancer in the area may be linked to the plant. Breen said he doesn?t recall any scientific studies linking the pulp and paper industry to cancer.

As for Boat Harbour, Breen said the wastewater treatment system is owned by the Province of Nova Scotia and operated by the mill since 1996 under a long-term lease arrangement that runs until 2030.

?The treatment facility has been upgraded several times since 1996 and is well in compliance with all federal and provincial regulations, standards and requirements and is among the top treatment systems in Canada,? he said.

At least one post on the Facebook group claimed there are toxins including heavy metals such as mercury and cadmium, and levels of dioxins and furans that exceed even those considered acceptable for industrial areas. Breen said this is simply untrue.

?Heavy metals, furans or dioxins are not byproducts of our operations and are not generated by Northern Pulp and are not deposited by Northern Pulp into Boat Harbour.?

Another post on the group indicated that biomass from Boat Harbour may be burned as fuel at the mill, a statement that Breen said is false.

?The mill does not burn this material in its boiler.?

He said that the solid material that settles in the wastewater treatment settling ponds is mainly wood waste and lime and that the material is trucked back to the mill site to cover the mill's industrial landfill site.

?This material enhances the growing of vegetation on the mill's closed landfill areas,? said Breen.

As for Gunning, a post on the Facebook page said that a meeting would be called in the coming days to discuss the group?s next step.

RadioShack, Dell and Lockheed are big movers

NEW YORK (AP) -- Stocks that moved substantially or traded heavily Friday on the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market:

NYSE

RadioShack Corp., down 32 cents to $2.57

The retailer's shares tumbled after Standard & Poor's said the company could default within a year and downgraded its credit rating.

Weight Watchers International Inc., down $9.04 to $37.99

Fewer people are signing up for the company's programs, which drove second-quarter net income down 16 percent. It also booked costs related to paying down debt early.

Cablevision Systems Corp., up 97 cents to $19.61

In response to questions about a possible sale of the company, executives on a conference call did not reject that possibility outright. CEO James Dolan said Cablevision would do what is best for shareholders and customers, and added "you never say never."

Lockheed Martin Corp., up $1.60 to $123.77

The Defense Department stressed that there are no plans to scrap the F-35 program or a project for a new long-range stealth bomber. Lockheed's F-35 is the Pentagon's most expensive weapons acquisition program, and an aircraft with a troubled testing record.

Nasdaq

Dell Inc., up 73 cents to $13.68

Dell's board agreed to an increased offer from founder Michael Dell that would add a special dividend for shareholders. Michael Dell is in a battle to buy the slumping computer maker he founded nearly 30 years ago.

Mylan Inc., up $2.42 to $36.40

The generic pharmaceutical company's stock hit an all-time high on an upgrade from Morgan Stanley. Analyst David Risinger said that Mylan had "crystallized future growth opportunities," which should increase investor confidence.

Body Central Corp., down $3.86 to $8.10

The trendy women's clothing company saw traffic at its stores decline and it was forced to make deep markdowns on its merchandise during the second quarter.

Alaska Communications Systems Group Inc., up 60 cents to $3.15

A recent acquisition, lower costs, more customers and higher roaming revenue translated into a major turnaround in the second quarter for the broadband provider.

The Moto X 'Quick Capture' camera

One of Motorola's standout features in the Moto X camera is "Quick Capture," which gets you from sleep to shooting in a mere 2 seconds, all with a simple flick of the wrist.

The idea sounds a little silly at first — do you really want to be flipping your phone around? But in actuality, it's pretty simple, and quick.

Russia's Putin says sentences in fraud case involving top critic Navalny were 'strange'

By Alexei Anishchuk

LAKE SELIGER, Russia (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday he was surprised by the five-year jail term a court handed down to Alexei Navalny, his top critic, when another man convicted in the same embezzlement case received only a suspended prison sentence.

In his first comments on the case since the July 18 verdict, Putin did not make clear if he was suggesting the jail sentence on Navalny was too harsh or the suspended one too lenient.

"I thought it was strange, I will not conceal that, that one of the suspects in the case, who cooperated with the prosecution, got four-and-a-half-years suspended, while the second suspect...was slapped with five years behind bars," Putin said.

"It is up to the court to decide what happened there and how," he told an audience of several thousand pro-Kremlin youth.

Navalny was convicted of embezzling some $500,000 from a state timber firm while Vyacheslav Opalev, a former head of the company, was given a suspended sentence after striking a plea bargain and testifying against his co-accused.

The face of the largest wave of street protests against ex-KGB spy's 13-year rule, Navalny denies any wrongdoing and says the case is an attempt by Putin to silence him.

Putin, dressed casually in a straw yellow shirt and a beige jacket, avoided referring to Navalny by name when responding to a question about the anti-graft blogger, who was released from detention pending appeal - a highly unusual move.

Since his release, Navalny has been busy campaigning in Moscow for a September8 mayoral election. Polls have him trailing far behind close Putin ally Sergei Sobyanin, who is seeking a fresh term.

Critics of Putin, now more than a year into his third presidential term, portray Navalny's prosecution and sentencing as part of a wider crackdown on dissent.

The Kremlin denies using the courts to persecute political opponents but the West has expressed growing concern over human rights in Russia and the treatment of critical voices since Putin returned to the presidency in mid-2012.

Threat closes US embassies in Muslim world for day

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, left, speaks to staff members at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013. The Obama administration hasn't sent its top diplomat to Pakistan since 2011, and Kerry's trip is a chance for the former senator to get to know the newly elected prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, who came to power in Pakistan's first transition between civilian governments.

(AP) ? The United States is shuttering its embassies and consulates throughout the Muslim world on Sunday after receiving an unspecified threat, officials said.

State Department officials said Thursday that they were taking action out of an "abundance of caution."

Spokeswoman Marie Harf cited information indicating a threat to U.S. facilities overseas and said some diplomatic facilities may stay closed for more than a day.

Other U.S. officials said the threat was in the Muslim world, where Sunday is a workday. American diplomatic missions in Europe, Latin America and many other places are closed on Sunday.

Those officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

The State Department issued a major warning last year informing American diplomatic facilities across the Muslim world about potential violence connected to the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Dozens of American installations were besieged by protest over an anti-Islam video made by an American resident.

In Benghazi, Libya, the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed when militants assaulted a diplomatic post. The administration no longer says that attack was related to the demonstrations.

GOP says no to Obama jobs package

President Barack Obama delivers remarks on the economy at the Amazon Chattanooga Fulfillment Center in Chattnooga, Tenn., July 30, 2013.

President Obama pressed GOP lawmakers on Tuesday to strike a deal that would lower corporate tax rates in exchange for boosting spending on jobs and infrastructure programs.

The White House cast the new plan as a ?grand bargain for the middle class,? as well as a new way to ease the partisan gridlock expected to intensify this fall with battles over funding the government and raising the debt ceiling.

?If we?re going to break free of the same old arguments, where I propose an idea and Republicans say no just because it?s my idea, let me try offering something that serious people in both parties should be able to support,? Obama said at an Amazon.com warehouse in Chattanooga, Tenn., where he outlined his new offer: ?A deal that simplifies the tax code for our businesses and creates good jobs with good wages for the middle-class folks who work at those businesses.?

Despite the olive branch, Obama?s proposal immediately drew fire from the top Republicans in Congress.

The plan, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) insisted, was ?an unmistakable signal that the president has backed away from his campaign-era promise to corporate America that tax reform would be revenue-neutral to them.?

GOP senators and aides also said the new White House plan raises serious questions about the chances for tax reform ? especially after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) had already said last week that the $975 billion in additional revenues included in the Senate budget should be the starting point for tax reform negotiations.

?Sometimes it just seems that this administration never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity to grow this economy,? Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) told reporters on Tuesday.

?This is part of the reason we have the slowest economic recovery since the Great Depression,? Toomey added. ?We don?t need more tax increases.?

Obama?s new plan recycles several of his previous proposals on corporate tax reform.

The White House plan to lower the corporate tax rate from 35 percent ? among the highest in the developed world ? to 28 percent was first rolled out by Treasury in 2012, as was the idea of pushing the effective rate to 25 percent for manufacturers.

The White House is also proposing to allow small businesses to write off as much as $1 million in investments, and calling on Congress to sign off on new infrastructure spending, aid to community colleges and investment in manufacturing hubs.

To pay for the new spending, Obama proposed a one-time ?transition fee? on the hundreds of billions of dollars that companies are currently holding or earning overseas.

?The point is, if Washington spent as much time and energy these past two years figuring out how to grow the economy and the middle class as it spent manufacturing crises in pursuit of a cut-at-all-costs approach to deficits, we?d be much better off,? Obama said in Chattanooga. The Hill

A Patient Genealogist: Heritage Scrapbooking: Preparing a ...

I feel terrible not posting more of my heritage scrapbooking projects. I have put them on hold a bit. I agreed to teach four classes at the local family history conference. I am excited. Knowing that I home school my kids, have an upcoming trip to Canada, and have a house that isn't self-cleaning, I am trying to space out the preparation of the class preparations. Thankfully, I was blessed with a day of free time with the kids self-managing nicely. So, I am happy to say I have one class prep down, and three more to go!

In case you know anyone fairly local, the Family History Symposium will be:
October 9, 2013
from 9 am to 4 pm

Cedar Rapids Family History Center,
4300 Trailridge Rd SE, Cedar Rapids, IA

Visit cedarrapidsfhc.org for more information as it becomes available.

Xiaomi unveils Red Rice smartphone in China: $130 for 720p and a quad-core CPU

Xiomi unveils the 47inch Red Rice smartphone quadcore 720p for $130

Xiaomi's talk about doubling smartphone sales over last year sounded a tad ambitious, but it turns out it had a secret weapon. The company just announced the Red Rice smartphone, a pretty decently spec'd model priced at a mere 799 yuan ($130). For that pittance, Chinese buyers will get quite a bit: a quad-core MediaTek CPU, 4.7-inch 720p screen (312 ppi) with Gorilla Glass 2, 1GB RAM, 4GB storage, China Mobile's TD-SCDMA 3G, dual-sim / dual standby capability, an 8-megapixel rear camera and Xiaomi's MIUI-flavored Android. Though it's lacking the WCDMA-3G used by other Chinese networks, China Mobile's 70 percent market share should give Xiaomi more than enough users to hit its targets, especially at that price.
