Michael Young open to destinations other than Texas

FOX Sports? Ken Rosenthal reported on Tuesday afternoon that Phillies infielder Michael Young would only approve a trade back to his old team, the Rangers. But that might not be entirely factual.

Jayson Stark of ESPN is hearing from sources that Young will ?consider other destinations? if the Phillies ask and that Boston would be his second choice.

It?s not clear at this point what his stance is on the Yankees, who are believed to have some interest.

Young, 36, is batting .277/.342/.402 with seven homers and 32 RBI in 99 games this season. He was dealt from the Rangers to the Phillies in December for righties Josh Lindblom and Lisalverto Bonilla.

Second known case of patient developing synesthesia after brain injury

[unable to retrieve full-text content]A Toronto man is only the second known person to have acquired synesthesia as a result of a brain injury, in this case a stroke. About nine months after suffering a stroke, the patient noticed that words written in a certain shade of blue evoked a strong feeling of disgust. Yellow was only slightly better. Raspberries, which he never used to eat very often, now tasted like blue -- and blue tasted like raspberries.

University of Cincinnati-led trial successfully tests antiplatelet drug eptifibatide combined with tPA

CINCINNATI -- The combination of the clot-busting drug tPA with an infusion of the antiplatelet drug eptifibatide dissolves blood clots safely and more quickly than tPA alone, a study led by University of Cincinnati (UC) researchers has found.

Results from the study, known as the CLEAR-ER Stroke Trial, are published online in the journal Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association. UC was the coordinating center for the trial, which included nine medical centers comprising 21 hospitals.

Standard treatment for acute ischemic stroke (characterized by an obstruction to the blood flow, typically a clot), is intravenous (IV) delivery of U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) within three hours of stroke onset.

The CLEAR-ER (Combined Approach to Lysis Utilizing Eptifibatide and rt-PA in Acute Ischemic Stroke Enhanced Regimen) trial was a phase-2 clinical trial designed to determine the safety of an enhanced dosing regimen using eptifibatide and establish evidence for a phase-3 clinical trial, which would use a larger pool of subjects. As an antiplatelet medication, eptifibatidedelivered intravenouslyworks together with the tPA to break up the existing clot and prevents formation of additional clots by decreasing the clumping of blood platelets.

"Through our team's research efforts, we were able to determine that eptifibatide may be safely combined with medium-dose IV tPA administered within three hours of symptom onset and that a phase-3 clinical trial is warranted," says Opeolu Adeoye, MD, UC assistant professor of emergency medicine and neurosurgery and a neurointensivist at UC Medical Center.

Adeoye was co-principal investigator along with Arthur Pancioli, MD, professor and Richard C. Levy Chair for Emergency Medicine at UC. Both Adeoye and Pancioli are members of the UC Neuroscience Institute, one of four institutes affiliated with the UC College of Medicine and UC Health

Says Pancioli: "We know that the combination of these two medications dissolves clots faster and more completely than tPA alone. Our goal is to determine if we can use this combination to improve the outcomes for acute stroke victims."

CLEAR-ER investigators enrolled 126 subjects from July 2009 to October 2012. Of those, 101 received tPA plus eptifibatide and 25 received tPA alone. As the trial was a double-blind, randomized study, neither patient nor doctor was aware if the substance administered in addition to tPA was a medication or a placebo.

Investigators examined safety at specified endpoints, watching for incidence of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), and 90-day outcomes using a standardized measurement tool. Of the subjects who were given tPA plus eptifibatide, 50 (49.5 percent) had what were classified as good outcomes. Those who received tPA alone had nine good outcomes (36 percent).

Safety between the two groups was shown to be comparable at 36-hour, seven-day and 90-day endpoints.

The potential next step in investigation of the enhanced regimen, a phase-3 clinical trial, would typically use a larger pool of subjects determined by data from the phase-2 trial. Phase-3 trials, the last step before marketing of a medication, typically confirm its effectiveness, monitor side effects, compare it to commonly used treatments and collect information that will allow it to be used safely.

###

Adeoye also presented the study results at the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference, held Feb. 5-8 in Honolulu.

The CLEAR-ER Stroke Trial was sponsored by the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) as a Specialized Programs of Translational Research in Acute Stroke (SPOTRIAS) project.

Drugs for the CLEAR-ER trial were supplied by Genentech (tPA) and Merck (eptifibatide, marketed as Integrilin). Adeoye serves as a consultant to Genentech and is a member of its speakers' bureau. Pancioli reports no conflicts.

the urban element: what makes a good cooking class? insight from ...

Don Chow (of Ottawa's foodieprints: a delicious blog that reveals stories about food, drink, cooking and eating in Canada's Capital) joined in on our Seed to Sausage cooking demonstration with Mike McKenzie in June. Below, Don shares with our readers his take on what makes for a good cooking class and captures a very tasty night in both visual and print. Thanks Don for sharing the evening with us!

There has been much written about upstart salumi producer, A Seed to Sausage, which is based out of Sharbot Lake in Southern Ontario.?? Its founder Mike McKenzie is recognized in restauranteur and chef entrepreneur circles from Montreal to Toronto.? Such may have something to do with McKenzie's seeming cross-province speaking tour.? Such may have something to do with Seed to Sausage's philosophy, "local, ethical, and humble."

McKenzie believes in being able to trace his products to "the seed" that grew the grass or grain on which livestock feed, hence "seed" to "sausage."

As much as possible, ingredients are locally-sourced from family farms.? Meat tends to be purchased whole and antibiotic-free. Everything is made by hand in small batches.

Recently, Seed to Sausage was chosen by Ace Bakery to participate in its Artisan Incubator program, which is part of a twentieth anniversary celebration.? Judges felt McKenzie's love for his craft and unwavering commitment to quality can be tasted in his cured and smoked meats, especially his chorizo and saucisson sec.?

McKenzie also believes in sharing the expertise he amassed, moving from hobby salumi-making to supplier for restaurants, fine food shops, and small-chain grocery stores.? You will find him and his team teaching a series of workshops at their facility in Sharbot Lake.? Everything from water and pressure canning to sausage-making is planned. In June, McKenzie will host sausage-making workshops out of the Cirillo?s Culinary Academy in Toronto (4894 Dundas Street W.) with Chefs Lynn Crawford and Lora Kirk.? Crawford and Kirk own and operate the highly acclaimed Ruby Watchco, located in between trendy Riverdale and Leslieville neighbourhoods.? Being one of the 20 chosen Ace Bakery artisans, he also has Food Network segments to film.???

On Monday evening, he taught an exclusive 12-person sausage-making course at The Urban Element in Ottawa (424 Parkdale Avenue).?

Owner Carley Schelck offers demonstration-based and hands-on cooking classes at her stylish learning kitchen, located in a renovated former fire station on Parkdale Avenue.?

It was a good class.

So, what makes a good cooking class?? the Urban Element's open concept kitchen is outfitted with several convection ovens, professional-grade ranges, ample refrigeration, and lengths of marble and granite counter-top that doubles as work surfaces for chocolate and pastry.

Level of Complexity
Schleck arranged for McKenzie to teach two courses; an in-depth one with advanced topics for members of the restaurant industry who already practice the craft of salting, smoking, and curing meat, which Michael Ruhlman rightly calls charcuterie; and a more introductory one for general enthusiasts who just want to learn sausage-making.

Staff
Schleck has cooks and servers available to support instructors.? Both demonstration and hands-on classes include multi-course plates, paired with craft beer and wine.? Cooks actively help with prep, plating, and cleanup.? Servers serve and clear plates.? Sometimes, for larger classes, Schelck's resident chef, Anna March, formerly of Mariposa Farms is on-hand.

Duration and Pacing
Schleck works with instructors, usually restaurant chefs, to establish lesson plans.? This way topics are scheduled so they can be delivered at a pleasant pace.

Participation
After having everyone attending his evening "general enthusiast" class introduce themselves, McKenzie asked us what we wanted to learn.? Then, he tailored his class to match.? Moreover, besides sharing much insight, McKenzie encouraged questions.? Attendees ground meat and stuffed sausage casings, working with a grinder and stuffer.? We made a batch of fresh sausage.

???
Cost
Urban Element courses tend to include a meal.? For hands-on courses, materials (ingredients) and equipment are provided.? When you consider the value-proposition, think "edu-tainment."

To summarize, good cooking classes convey expertise, share insight, and tell a compelling story.?

Attendees were already familiar with Seed to Sausage, several big fans.? Some were gifted the course on occasion of Father's Day.

Seed to Sasuage's Jalapeno Cheese Curd Smokies on Carrot Slaw

???????????

Seed to Sausage Charcuterie Tasting Plate; Hunters Salami, Northern Italian, Speck, Calabrese, Chorizo, and House Cured Ham

Some insight McKenzie shared:???

  • In order to ensure good "particle separation" (essentially well distributed meat, fat, and seasoning), ingredients need to be kept cold, so freeze as much of your equipment as you can; cut your meat into strips so the auger of the grinder can carry the meat through, eliminating the need to plunge the meat, which creates friction; chill your hands in ice water before handling the meat or mince; if you don't have separate equipment for grinding and stuffing sausage, you may need to let your grinder cool after it processes your meat.
  • ???
  • Minimize air pockets in your sausage.? Air pockets can lead to bacterial growth.
  • ???
  • If you plan on making sausage-making a hobby, invest in disposable gloves meant for food handling.? They make cleanup easier.
  • ???
  • When cleaning your meat grinder, feed bits of stale bread through.
  • ???
  • Let freshly made sausage age overnight.? The ensures the meat binds with the casing, minimizing the risk of it escaping out of the ends of the sausage when cooked.

????????????????????????????????????????? Grinding the Pork Butt
????????????????????????????????????????? Putting the Sausage Mince Together

????????????????????????????????????????? Stuffing Sausage Casings

"You'd be surprised.? Three pairs of gloves can save your marriage when making sausage," explained McKenzie.

"When you make sausage, you don't need a lot of ingredients!"

Seed to Sausage's sausages tend to include 5 ingredients or less.?

To cook his fresh sausages, McKenzie recommends heating them up in an oven set to 225F for 30-40 minutes.

The sausage we made included boneless pork shoulder, pickled jalapenos, cheese curds, crushed dried chiles, and salt (generally 2% by mass).

Good food! Engaging instructor! Great class!

Firefighters have California blaze nearly half contained

LOS ANGELES | Sun Jul 21, 2013 12:04am EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Cooler weather helped firefighters make significant gains on Saturday against a massive wildfire in Southern California, as crews cut containment lines around nearly 50 percent of the blaze.

The so-called Mountain Fire has burned across more than 27,000 acres of dry brush and timber and destroyed seven residences since it broke out on Monday. At least 5,600 residents remain under evacuation orders.

The more than 3,000 firefighters tackling the blaze on Saturday managed to expand containment lines to encircle 49 percent of the fire, up from 25 percent earlier in the day, said Carol Jandrall, fire information officer for the multiagency team battling the conflagration.

"It's been probably the best day so far," she said of the progress made on Saturday.

Higher humidity and clouds, which reduced sunlight on the burn area and tempered the intensity of the flames, helped firefighters cut more containment lines along the east and south flanks of the fire where it originated, Jandrall said.

Firefighters had hoped for rain, but little precipitation actually fell, she said. At the same time, the erratic winds that can propel a fire and had been feared as the weather changed also did not materialize, Jandrall said.

The flames have forced the evacuation of the town of Idyllwild, a community about a mile above sea level known for its hiking trails, rock climbing, and arts and music scene, and also forced out residents from the nearby community of Fern Valley.

Residents of Idyllwild and Fern Valley have been out of their homes since evacuations were ordered on Wednesday.

A few hundred people have been allowed to return home in neighboring areas where the threat of flames has decreased, said Norma Bailey, a spokeswoman for the team combating the blaze.

The Mountain Fire is 90 miles east of Los Angeles.

Conditions could improve on Sunday, Jandrall said.

"They are expecting a chance for more precipitation which would be great," she said.

Ex-NSA chief: Huawei spies for China, Snowden security leak 'most destructive' in U.S. history

China-based network hardware company Huawei poses an "unambiguous national security threat" to the United States, according to former CIA and NSA director Michael Hayden in an interview with the Australian Financial Review.

Hayden, who is a retired four-star Air Force general, also deemed Edward Snowden's exposure of the United States' PRISM program "the single most destructive leak of American security information in our history," adding that Americans will be far more comfortable with the nation's secretive surveillance programs "once the media gives us a proper opportunity to explain exactly what it is the U.S. intelligence community does for its people."

Hayden isn't the first U.S. official to raise doubt about Huawei's trustworthiness as a business partner. Late last year, a U.S. House Intelligence Committee released a damning report about Huawei (and ZTE), saying the companies posed a national security threat to the United States because of their potential to spy and steal data on behalf of the Chinese government. The committee also "strongly encouraged [U.S. companies] to consider the long-term security risks associated with doing business with [the company]" and advised "U.S. network providers and systems developers ... to seek other vendors for their projects."

The U.K. government has some misgivings about Huawei as well: It is launching a review of the vetting process it uses for Huawei products. In particular, the U.K. government is upset that Huawei was able to sell networking products directly to major network operator BT without proper vetting. The company has a Cyber Security Evaluation Centre in the U.K., but it is under direct control of Huawei; the U.K. wants to staff the evaluation team with employees from the British intelligence agency so as to head off any potential Chinese espionage using Huawei equipment.

But Hayden was more direct in accusing Huawei of spying for China: "Two or three years ago, Huawei was trying to establish a pretty significant footprint here in the United States. ... I reviewed Huawei's briefing paper, which said all the right things. ... But God did not make enough briefing slides on Huawei to convince me that having them involved in our critical communications infrastructure was going to be OK," Hayden said. "My conclusion was that, no, it is simply not acceptable for Huawei to be creating the backbone of the domestic telecommunications network in the United States, period."

AFR interviewer Christopher Joye asked Hayden point-blank whether "it is reasonable to assume that hard evidence exists that Huawei has engaged in espionage on behalf of the Chinese state."

To that, Hayden replied, "Yes, that's right. And, at a minimum, Huawei would have shared with the Chinese state intimate and extensive knowledge of the foreign telecommunications systems it is involved with. I think that goes without saying. That's one reality."

Hayden also had some choice words about former NSA contractor Snowden. "He's certainly not a hero," said Hayden. "The word 'traitor' has a very narrowly defined legal meaning that he may not in the end quite meet. I personally think Snowden is a very troubled, narcissistic young man who has done a very, very bad thing."

Snowden, by Hayden's reckoning, leaked details about the PRISM program "because of his ideological embrace of transparency as a virtue. ... It is a little like the Boston bombers. The issue [in the Boston bombings case] is at what point does Islamic fundamentalism flip over and become a genuine national security threat?" Hayden said. "Likewise, at what point does a cultural tendency toward transparency flip [as in the Snowden case] over to become a deep threat inside your system? They are similar issues."

Whatever his motives, Snowden's leaks have already made the United States more insecure, according to Hayden. "The Snowden leaks have the potential, if not already the reality, to be the most single most destructive leak of American security information in our history," Hayden said. "Snowden is attempting to reveal the underlying architecture of the U.S. intelligence-gathering network. We've lost cups of water before. We've lost buckets of water. Yet this is a guy who is exposing the very plumbing that pipes the information. He's exposing the methods through which we access information."

Beyond criticizing Snowden for exposing PRISM, Hayden chastised the media for "[mangling] this story so badly that Americans don't quite understand what it is that their government is or is not doing."

"When the media gives us a proper opportunity to explain exactly what it is the U.S. intelligence community does for its people, then I think we can make Americans very comfortable," Hayden said.

Boy Scouts of America jamboree camp excludes obese Boy Scouts

Boy Scouts of America's new headquarters for the national jamboree comes with new requirements on participating scouts. Too high of a BMI score and a scout cannot attend.?

This year's?Boy?Scouts?of America's national Jamboree is being billed as the most physically demanding in its history: There's rock climbing, rappelling, whitewater rafting and biking. And?Scouts?will go about the sprawling, hilly landscape the old-fashioned way ? on foot.

Thousands of?Scouts?gather for 10 days starting Monday at a new location in West Virginia. Officials designed the 1,000-plus acre Summit Bechtel Family National?Scout?Reserve to take advantage of the Mountain State's natural assets, and they also put into place new physical fitness requirements that eliminated morbidly obese?Scouts?from participating.

"Part of the design in building this site was to address the need for physical fitness in our youth, which of course is a longstanding component of?Scouting," said Dan McCarthy, director of the BSA's Summit Group. "We saw this as an opportunity to integrate some new challenges ... so we deliberately spread the site to enable us to encourage?Scouts?and basically require?Scouts?to move about the site by foot."

This year, 30,000?Scouts?ages 12 to 20 and their leaders were required to meet a threshold for body mass index and other health factors before being allowed to participate. Jamboree applicants with a BMI ? a measure of body fat determined through height and weight ? of 40 or higher were deemed ineligible. Those who fell between 32 and 39.9 faced providing additional health information to Jamboree medical staff.

Nationally, about 17 percent of children ages 2 to 19 are considered obese ? triple the rate from a generation earlier, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"We required a level of fitness in order to come to the Jamboree that we haven't required before," McCarthy said. "And that has motivated an enormous return in terms of both kids and adults getting serious about improving their health."

Soon, the?Scouts?will know why. Besides offering a whole lot of fun, dozens of venues will test their physical skills and fitness. At some point during the Jamboree, every participating?Scout?will be asked to take a 3-mile trek up a mountain.

NEW In the Galleries - James M. Smith: Unscripted Through August 25 at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art

St. Louis-based artist James M. Smith assembles large-scale collage-like tableaux that move between the two-dimensional and the sculptural, the representational and the abstract. This densely populated exhibit of work from the past five years is divided into two halves: nonrepresentational work and pieces that integrate legible forms. As a whole, it has a Mad Max feel: Torn and roughly patched-together canvases create weathered substrates on which are painted aggressive fields of scribbled charcoal or loose blue grids. Ropes and knotted clusters of salvaged wood accrete to siren- or missile-like forms. Familiar imagery, if present, appears sooty and vaguely menacing: black zeppelins and industrial towers, ragged flags and rusted ladders. It's an out-of-time last-ditch world of desperately cobbled oases: of shelter, defense, communication, transportation. Part Bontecou and part Rauschenberg, Smith's work seems to address the anthropology of ravaged textures: frayed edges and splintered wood, all things ripped, wrought and wind-blown. Through August 25 at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art, 3663 Lindell Boulevard; 314-977-2666 or www.slu.edu/x16374.xml. Hours: 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Wed.-Sun.

Jay-Z's subway friend raves about his album

Pop culture

She may not be able to hear very well, but 67-year-old Ellen Grossman is a big fan of Jay-Z's new album, "Magna Carta Holy Grail."

Grossman, a New York City-based artist whose subway conversationwith the music mogul appeared in Jay-Z's 2012 documentary "Where I'm From," was recently commissioned by MTV News to do a review of the new album. While the album has received mixed reviews from music critics and fans, Grossman praised Jay-Z for "going deep into his heart" on his latest offering.

"(He's saying) that the money's nice, but there's life beyond that, that he's exploring," Grossman said in a video posted on MTV.com. "I picked that up from the papers but I felt it in the man, too, when I met him ... that he had a depth to him."

Grossman's favorite tracks on the album include "Holy Grail," a profanity-laden tune that features Justin Timberlake, and "BBC," a party track that features, among other special guests Jay-Z's wife, Beyonce Knowles. Although Grossman said she had trouble understanding the words due to her hearing problems, she thought the track was "wonderful" and even made her want to get up and dance.

After listening to "Part II (On the Run)," which also featured Knowles, Grossman commented that the song was "sexy."

"I don't get all of the words but I get a lot of them and I'm really enjoying it," she said of the album. "I like jazz and what's called 'new music' and I can relate to all the soundscapes. It's really innovative stuff.

"What they're putting out in their art is really opening themselves up."

Aust bonds weaken as US jobs rise in June

AAP

Australian bond futures contract prices are weaker as healthy American jobs data adds to expectations of the US Federal Reserve will begin tapering its bond-buying program sooner rather than later.

The American labour department on Friday night, Australian time, revealed that 195,000 US jobs were created in June, well above the consensus prediction of 166,000 new positions.

CMC Markets chief market strategist Michael McCarthy said the upward revision to the April and May jobs figures, showing combined gains of 70,000 more jobs than previously expected, was also hitting 10-year Australian bond futures contract prices.

"Those much stronger-than-expected numbers for the month, plus an upward revision of previous months' numbers, have pushed forward the idea that stimulus will tamper very soon," he said.

"There's unlikely to be any extension of the easy monetary policy in the US, and that, of course, means pressure on bonds in particular."

While the US jobless rate held steady at 7.6 per cent, the sharp increase in new jobs means the US Fed could start easing its quantitative easing stimulus measures this year, and phase out the mass bond buying by late 2014.

Three-year Australian bond futures contract prices had less change, as some dealers brace for the prospect of further domestic interest rate cuts.

"The market locally is divided about the possibility of any further cuts," Mr McCarthy said, adding that three-year futures contract prices were "likely to be more volatile" as rate cut speculation flipped around.

At 0830 AEST the September 10-year bond futures contract was trading at 96.000 (implying a yield of 4.000 per cent), down from 96.165 (3.835 per cent) on Friday.

The September three-year bond futures contract was at 97.010 (2.990 per cent), down from 97.130 (2.870 per cent).

Flipping fish adapt to land living

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Researchers have found that the amphibious mangrove rivulus performs higher force jumps on land than some other fishes that end up on land. This new study shows that unlike the largemouth bass, which makes very few excursions on land, the mangrove rivulus, which can live out of water for extended periods, has a strong jumping technique on land to locate new food resources, avoid predators, escape poor water conditions and also to return to the water.

Ford Flex styling is standout feature

By Ann M. Job/The Associated Press

The bold, boxy exterior of the Ford Flex is such a forceful statement, it can distract from the other notable features of this generously sized, six- to seven-passenger crossover vehicle.

But Flex stylists aren't retreating. For 2013, they updated the Flex front end with new fascia, grille and headlights for a more impactful appearance.

Even the blue Ford logo has been removed from the grille now, leaving the word "Flex" spelled out in large letters across the front edge of the hood.

If this is not enough of a distinctive look, Flex buyers can opt for a roof color that's different from the body of the vehicle. As an example, the test 2013 Flex came with a Silver, two-tone roof atop a body painted Deep Impact Blue.

Try finding this combination on a factory-built Honda Pilot or Dodge .

The Flex also is one of the few large people haulers that offers a turbocharged, gasoline V-6. Ford's EcoBoost V-6 generates 365 horsepower and 350 foot-pounds of torque at 3,500 rpm in the hefty, 4,800-pound Flex. This compares with the 250-horsepower, non-turbo V-6 with 253 foot-pounds of torque at 4,800 rpm that's the only engine available in the Pilot.

Consumer Reports lists the Flex as a recommended buy with average reliability overall, but prices -- particularly for a Flex with EcoBoost engine -- can be eye opening.

Starting manufacturer's suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $31,795 for a base 2013 Flex SE with front-wheel drive. This

base model comes with naturally aspirated, 287-horsepower V-6 and cloth seats with middle second row that's a bench. The lowest starting retail price, including destination charge, for a 2013 Flex with all-wheel drive is $36,145 and this also includes the non-turbo V-6. The lowest starting MSRP and destination charge for a 2013 Flex with the turbo V-6 is $45,195.

This luxury-segment price stems from the fact the turbo is only available on the top-of-the-line Flex Limited which comes with standard luxury features such as perforated leather seats, 19-inch wheels, blind-spot monitor, navigation system and Sony audio with 12 speakers. Also, the turbo engine is only in the 2013 Flex Limited with all-wheel drive.

In comparison, the starting MSRP, including destination charge, for a base, 2013 Pilot with front-wheel drive is $30,350, and a 2013 Dodge Durango which has three rows of seats and a 290-horsepower, naturally aspirated V-6, has a starting retail price of $30,490 with rear-wheel drive.

The Flex can be difficult to describe. Some people call it a crossover SUV because it sits lower to the pavement than a traditional SUV and has more car-like ride and handling. But others see the Flex exterior shape as a wagon, albeit one that stretches 17 feet in overall length and stands 5.7 feet tall.

These dimensions make the Flex longer than the Pilot and but shorter in height.

But then, the Flex does not have as low a floor as a minivan does, and it requires a bit more work than a minivan to get inside to the third row.

Whether it's the odd looks, the difficulty in describing what the Flex is or the pricing, the Flex is the lowest-selling Ford-branded SUV/crossover/wagon. Sales last calendar year totaled 28,224, which is only a quarter of the total U.S. sales for the Pilot. And so far in calendar 2013, Flex sales are down another 22 percent from what they were last year at this time.

Still, the roomy interior of the tester was impressive. Front-seat passengers get nearly 42 inches of headroom and nearly 41 inches of legroom. In comparison, front-seat headroom in the Pilot is 40 inches, with 41.4 inches of legroom.

In the second row, Flex riders can have an amazing 44 inches of legroom as the separate captain's chairs can slide fore and aft to adjust legroom between second and third rows.

Meantime, even adults can sit decently comfortable in the Flex's third row seats for two with an impressive 38.7 inches of headroom -- vs. 37.8 inches in the Durango -- and legroom of 33.3 inches. This third-row legroom surpasses the 31.5 inches in the Durango and 32.1 inches in the back of the Pilot.

The Flex dashboard can appear a bit massive, but the selection of soft-touch plastics and textures looked good in the test vehicle.

But the sizable metal pillars at the sides of the windshield were major obstacles for a driver trying to make turns into crosswalks.

Because the Flex tester had the turbo, it came with suspension tuned for a bit tighter body control than a base Flex. As a result, the test vehicle rode through twisty mountain roads without conveying a loose feeling of uncontrolled weight shift back and forth.

There was a less tippy feeling overall, but passengers felt road vibrations, and the optional 20-inch wheels sometimes sent strong impacts from potholes through the vehicle.

The uplevel, 3.5-liter, double overhead cam, turbocharged V-6 delivered power smoothly and strongly and worked through a six-speed automatic.

In the Limited, there are paddle shifters at the steering wheel so a sporty-minded driver can select forward gear shifts on his or her own. But it's debatable how many Flex buyers want to use this feature.

Fuel economy isn't great, even when the Flex carries only one person and no cargo. The tester averaged just 18 miles per gallon, which is on par with the federal government ratings.

Some 2013 Flex models were among nearly 400,000 Ford vehicles recalled late last month because a fuel module may crack and cause fuel to leak, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

2013 Ford Flex Limited AWD

Base price: $30,900 for SE; $33,300 for SEL FWD; $35,250 for SEL AWD; $39,200 for Limited FWD; $41,150 for Limited AWD; $44,300 for Limited AWD with EcoBoost.

Price as tested: $50,310.

Type: Front-engine, all-wheel drive, six-passenger, large wagon.

Engine: 3.5-liter, double overhead cam, 60-degree, turbocharged, EcoBoost V-6 with iVCT.

Wheelbase: 117.9 inches.

Russian rocket crashes in Kazakhstan

The rocket exploded over the Russian-leased Baikonur launch facility in Kazakhstan

An unmanned Russian Proton-M rocket has crashed just seconds after its launch from the Russian Baikonur facility in Kazakhstan.

Dramatic video footage broadcast by Russian TV shows the rocket break up before exploding into a fireball over the Baikonur cosmodrome.

Russia's Interfax news agency reported that up to 500 tonnes of poisonous rocket fuel may have been released and contaminated the crash site.

There were no reported injuries.

The rocket was carrying three satellites for Russia's Glonass (global) navigation satellite system.

It is not yet clear what caused the accident.

It is not the first incident involving a Proton-M rocket, according to the BBC's Steve Rosenberg in Moscow.

A similar rocket crashed shortly after it was launched six years ago, and in 2010 another rocket failed to put three navigation satellites into orbit.

'Dexter' Season 8: Will Dexter Survive The Season?

The new season of "Dexter" premieres on Sunday night, and with Season 8 confirmed as the series' final one, the question on everyone's mind is whether or not Dexter (Michael C. Hall) will make it through.

"Dexter has been playing faster and looser with the code for some time now, and I think there's some unconscious desire to reveal himself and that may manifest itself through reckless behavior," Hall told TV Guide.

Less cryptically, Jennifer Carpenter, who plays Deb, said she had a feeling Dexter wouldn't die. "At the end of the season? No," she said. "Someday? Yes, because we all do."

As for how fans will react to the finale season and Dexter's fate, EP Sara Colleton knows she won't be pleasing everyone.

"We all know that no matter what we do there are going to be a lot of people who are unhappy with it," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "We're trying to not think about that and just think of what everyone who has been on the show from the beginning feels is right and that's all we can do. No matter what we do we'll still be excoriated."

Catch the season premiere of "Dexter" on Sun., June 30 at 9 p.m. ET on Showtime.

Oregon case shows NCAA playing with blinders

OPINION

Bradley Handwerger / WWLTV.com Sports Reporter
Email: bhandwerger@wwltv.com | Twitter: @wwltvsports

The NCAA issued a basic slap on the wrist to Oregon on Wednesday in a case that showed, once again, the institution is making things up as it goes along.

From the way it handled the Miami case by improperly obtaining information to overreaching on Penn State to hitting Ohio State for what seems like small stuff, the NCAA is proving to be as inconsistent as anything you can think of.

The latest case mostly involved Oregon?s relationship with Willie Lyles, who owns a Texas-based recruiting service, and what the NCAA?s infractions committee found to be a questionable payment to him.

But at least the NCAA got one thing right in this case ? it appears to have put the burden of the punishment on Chip Kelly, the former head coach who fled college for the NFL when it became apparent investigators were sniffing.

While the school received only one scholarship reduction per year and reduced paid visits for three years, Oregon will not get a bowl ban.

However, should Kelly go down in a quick ball of fire with the Philadelphia Eagles, any school trying to hire him will have to present him in front of the NCAA infractions committee in what is known as a show-cause procedure.

In other words, the NCAA isn?t completely punishing those still at Oregon for Kelly?s poor job in overseeing the program and the relationships it help during his stint.

Many times the NCAA seems to punish those innocent bystanders the hardest.

This time, while the school and players did receive something, it was Kelly who was hit the hardest.

The show-cause puts the burden of the infractions on him. It says he was responsible for the missteps, for not keeping both eyes on the program as the head coach should.

Still, if Ohio State was burdened with a postseason ban for players receiving free tattoos, among other things, then Oregon deserves to miss out, too.

The NCAA got the Oregon decision right. It messed up everywhere else. Hopefully this is showing a trend in the right direction.

Hernandez arrested, NFL owners shudder
Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was arrested Wednesday morning nearly a week after a Boston semi-pro football was found dead near the New England player?s house.

The Patriots released the tight end from his contract hours before he was formally charged with murder.

This comes on the heels of a rookie Cleveland Browns linebacker being arrested for attempted murder after allegedly punching a man outside a bar in New Jersey.

Which came about two weeks after Adam ?Pacman? Jones was arrested and charged with assault after police said he hit a woman at a bar.

Here?s the point.

NFL owners must hate the offseason. There?s a reason coaches want it to last as little amount of time as possible. It?s when there?s no oversight and when there?s the biggest time for trouble.

Owners have millions of dollars tied up in these players. While the vast majority of players are playing by the rules of the law and not getting in trouble, it?s the few who are not who are bringing shame upon the league and their employers.

Like fans, owners must be thinking the last week of July can?t get here quickly enough.

Bring back Rosenblatt Stadium
UCLA earned its first NCAA baseball title Tuesday night when it finished off a sweep of Mississippi State in the College World Series.

And it did it without hitting a home run.

Of course, the Bruins weren?t alone. In 14 games, just three home runs were hit.

That?s one, two, three.

According to an Associated Press story, the problem isn?t TD Ameritrade Park as much as it is a confluence of other things.

The dimensions of the new stadium match those of Rosenblatt Stadium. But the bats have changed, deadened to take life out of the ball, and the field faces a different direction than it used to, changing the wind direction for batters.

There are simple changes that can be made that won?t cost what it would to rebuild Rosenblatt, which isn?t happening.

The bats can be livened back up a bit. The seams on the ball can change. Though expensive, the fences can be brought in some.

But one thing is for sure ? pitchers are now rewarded for bad pitches instead of being punished.

That has to change.
