Freeman's 2 HRs help Braves beat Cardinals

ATLANTA (AP) - Freddie Freeman wasn't surprised his new glasses were a big hit. He just feared his swing might be rusty.

Freeman homered and drove in three runs in his return to the lineup to help the Atlanta Braves recover after blowing a five-run lead and beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-7 on Wednesday night.

Freeman, who had missed four straight starts because of vision problems, was elated about receiving his new sports glasses before the game. He was so excited he rushed to the batting cage early Wednesday afternoon to test the glasses before taking off the shorts and polo shirt he wore to the stadium.

The first baseman broke out of a slump with three hits: his eighth homer in the first, a run-scoring double in the third and run-scoring single in the eighth.

"I was surprised about how I hadn't played in a few days and was able to have my swing like that," Freeman said. "I wasn't worried about the glasses. I knew they were good."

Following the game, the Braves optioned rookie shortstop Tyler Pastornicky to Triple-A Gwinnett. Andrelton Simmons, who is hitting .292 at Double-A Mississippi, was called up and is expected to take over the starting job.

General manager Frank Wren said Simmons, who is known for his defense, has "special talents" at shortstop.

Pastornicky is hitting .248 with seven errors.

The Braves, who snapped an eight-game losing streak on Tuesday night, gave up a 5-0 lead, then scored three runs in the sixth. Brian McCann's two-run single highlighted the rally.

McCann, who had a two-run homer in the first, drove in four runs.

Jonny Venters (3-2) recorded the last out of the sixth. Craig Kimbrel earned his 15th save.

"We went through a stretch," Freeman said of the losing streak. "Everybody goes through a stretch in the season. Hopefully that was our longest one. ... It's how you minimize those and we bounced back like a winning team does."

After Freeman's homer, Tim Hudson and other teammates made circles in front of their eyes, pretending to wear glasses, as they welcomed him to the dugout. Freeman said before the game he didn't care if he looked different in glasses.

"I can see and that's all that matters," he said.

Hudson said Freeman "came in and did what he did. He plays great first base and he's some of our thump in the lineup."

The Braves broke a 5-all tie with three runs on four hits off Mark Rzepczynski (0-3) in the sixth. Jack Wilson's double drove in Jose Constanza, who reached first on his third hit and moved to second on a wild pitch.

Wilson was caught in a run-down between third and home on Michael Bourn's grounder, but he kept the play going long enough for Bourn to advance to second. Following an intentional walk to Martin Prado, McCann drove in Bourn and Prado with a single for an 8-5 lead.

The Cardinals scored two runs off Eric O'Flaherty in the eighth off Shane Robinson's sacrifice fly and Carlos Beltran's infield single.

The Braves added two runs in the eighth off Jason Motte, who set up the inning with walks to Eric Hinske and Bourn. Dan Uggla drove in one with a sac fly and Freeman finished the scoring by knocking in Bourn.

"The bottom line is seven runs should win a lot of games," said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. "We're not doing what we need to do to give us a chance. Some adjustments have to be made."

Atlanta led 5-0 before the Cardinals managed their first hit.

McCann hit a two-run homer in the first. One out later, Freeman cleared the center-field wall off Kyle Lohse.

With two outs in the third and Uggla on first base following his single, Freeman hit a high pop fly into the wind, blowing in from left field.

Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday sprinted toward the infield but couldn't catch up as the wind blew the ball away from the outfield, dropping in shallow left field for a double that scored Uggla.

Constanza added a run-scoring single.

Rafael Furcal led off the fourth with a single for the Cardinals' first hit. Holliday drove in Furcal with a one-out single.

Tyler Green's two-run, bases-loaded single was the big hit in the Cardinals' four-run sixth off Hudson. Holliday and Daniel Descalso also had RBI singles.

Hudson gave up five runs on six hits in 5 2-3 innings.

"I'm not happy with my outcome personally," Hudson said.

"It seems like the last couple of games every baserunner I've had has scored."

Lohse allowed five runs on nine hits in five innings.

Right fielder Skip Schumaker left the game after the sixth inning with tightness in his right hamstring.

Matheny said the MRI was clear, but Garcia's scheduled start Friday at the Mets will be skipped. Painkillers Protect Against Skin Cancer

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Researchers in Denmark say common painkillers could help protect against skin cancer.

The study finds that people who filled more than two prescriptions for pain relievers, like ibuprofen and aspirin, decreased their risk for developing two types of skin cancer.

They also found that those who took the meds for years at a time were more likely to benefit. Doctors say more research is necessary and the best way to prevent skin cancer is to wear sunscreen.

Younger colon cancer patients have worse prognosis at diagnosis ...

Younger patients with colorectal cancer were more likely to present advanced stage tumors at diagnosis and metastasize much sooner, yet had better than or equal survival to patients 50 and older, according to data being presented at the 2012 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting in Chicago. (Abstract # 3621).

The study was led by Edith Mitchell, M.D., a clinical professor in the Department of Medical Oncology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Mitchell is also Director of the newly-established Center to Eliminate Cancer Disparities at Jefferson's Kimmel Cancer Center.

"We're seeing more advanced tumors in this population because the cases aren't being caught early enough," said Dr. Mitchell. "Screening isn't recommended until age 50, and the younger a patient is, the more likely they are to ignore symptoms of more advanced stages of the disease."

The objective of this study was to assess pathological features and outcomes of colorectal cancer in patients less than age 50 using an institutional sample and comparing to the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database.

Dr. Mitchell and colleagues obtained data from the tumor registry of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) on 4,595 patients treated for colorectal cancer from 1988 to 2007. They compared those data with data obtained from the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database on 290,338 patients with colorectal cancer treated from 1988 to 2004. The researchers collected data on location, stage and histologic grade of the cancer.

Patients under age 50 with colorectal cancer presented with more advanced stage tumors in both data sets (SEER and TJUH), and had more poorly differentiated tumors than older patients, the researchers found. Patients under 50 also had more mucinous/signet ring cell tumors with 12 percent to 8.1 percent in the TJUH data and 13.2 percent to 10.3 percent in the SEER data, with younger males having the highest prevalence in both data sets.

Younger patients had fewer right-side tumors than patients 50 and over, and a higher proportion of rectal tumors. Patients under age 50 were also more likely to have positive nodes at all stages relative to 50 and over, as well as more likely to develop peritoneal metastases, but less likely to have lung metastases than older patients.

Despite their poor pathologic features, patients under age 50 had better than or equal survival to those 50 and older, which may in part be explained by their overall health. Early evidence suggests that younger patients are able to tolerate more aggressive cancer therapies because of fewer co-morbidities, said co-author Scott Goldstein, M.D., of Jefferson's Department of Surgery.

"Ongoing studies will help clarify the survival disparity and assess differences in treatment and molecular features between younger and older colorectal cancer patients," Dr. Mitchell said.

Russian FM: Both Syrian sides to blame for deaths

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia further backed away from its support of Syrian President Bashar Assad on Monday, saying his government bears the main responsibility for the violence in the country and calling for a full investigation into its role in the deaths of more than 100 civilians in Houla.

"Both sides have obviously had a hand in the deaths of innocent people, including several dozen women and children. This area is controlled by the rebels, but it is also surrounded by government troops," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said after talks in Moscow with visiting British Foreign Secretary William Hague.

Lavrov spoke a day after Russia agreed to join the rest of the U.N. Security Council in blaming the Syrian government for attacking residential areas in Houla, a collection of villages near the central city of Homs. The council, however, avoided saying who was responsible for the massacre of at least 108 men, women and children.

Lavrov said there was no doubt that government forces had used artillery and tanks to shell Houla, but he noted that many of the dead appeared to have been shot at close range or tortured.

"The guilt has to be determined objectively," he said. "No one is saying that the government is not guilty, and no one is saying that the armed militants are not guilty."

In some of Russia's harshest criticism of Assad to date, Lavrov said his government "bears the main responsibility for what is going on" because it is failing to provide for the security of Syrian citizens. He hedged the criticism by claiming that Syria's government is facing an increased threat from terrorists, whose bombings have the "clear signature of al-Qaida."

Alexei Malashenko, a Middle East expert with the Carnegie Moscow Center, said Russia can no longer defend Assad's government and may be warning him that he needs to change his approach.

"Bashar Assad is driving himself and Russia into a corner," Malashenko said. "If this goes on, Russia will have no other option" but to pull its support. "Bashar has definitely gotten the sense that he may lose Russia's sympathy and he may step back a bit."

Lavrov and Hague both called for greater efforts to implement a peace plan put forward by special envoy Kofi Annan, who arrived in Damascus on Monday for talks with Assad and other senior Syrian officials. Annan's six-point plan calls on both sides to respect a cease-fire.

"It's right, as Sergey Lavrov has just done, to call on all parties to cease violence, and we are not arguing that all violence in Syria is the responsibility of the Assad regime, although it has the primary responsibility for such violence," Hague said.

Lavrov added that "we don't support the Syrian government, we support Kofi Annan's plan."

The Russian envoy called for everyone in the international community to exert more pressure on both sides to implement Annan's plan, saying it was not clear from talks with opposition members that they were getting the message that the plan had full international support. He said talk about the need for Assad to step down cast doubt on the West's commitment to the Annan plan and encouraged the opposition to keep up the fight.

Hague, however, confirmed that Britain still believes Assad should stand aside.

"But the important thing is that the Annan plan is pursued in whatever way it can be pursued," he said. "The alternatives are the Annan plan or ever-increasing chaos in Syria, and a descent closer and closer to all-out civil war and collapse."

China on Monday also condemned the killings of civilians in Houla and called for an end to the violence, but gave no indication it was rethinking its strategy toward the fighting in Syria.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said that Beijing fully supports Annan's mediation efforts and the UN monitors.

The protests against Assad began in March 2011 and turned into an uprising after his government responded with a violent crackdown on dissent. The U.N. estimated that at least 9,000 people were killed in the first year of the conflict, but hundreds more have been killed since then.

COLUMBUS ? Ohio officials are preparing to impose new rules on owners of exotic animals ? along with hiring more staff and writing new caretaking standards ? without knowing exactly how many lions, leopards, bears and other creatures are living in the state.

That?s because until the governor signs the new regulations into law, which is expected in the coming weeks, Ohio?s restrictions on exotic pets have been among the nation?s weakest.

Efforts to strengthen the law took on new urgency after owner Terry Thompson released 50 animals, including black bears, mountain lions and Bengal tigers, from his eastern Ohio farm in Zanesville in October, then committed suicide. Authorities killed 48 of the animals as a public safety measure. Two others were believed to have been eaten by other animals.

The state Legislature cleared a bill last week that would immediately ban people from buying new dangerous exotic animals, such as cheetahs and crocodiles, once the measure takes effect.

Current owners could keep their creatures by obtaining a new state-issued permit by 2014. They would have to pass a background check, pay permit fees, obtain liability insurance and show inspectors that they can properly contain the animal and adhere to other standards.

Within 60 days after the bill?s effective date, owners would have to microchip their dangerous wildlife and register them. They?ll have to tell the state where the animals are, how many they have, what the creatures look like and who their veterinarian is, among other details.

State officials hope the registration process will give them a better handle on Ohio?s exotic animal population.

?We?re really kind of dealing with the unknown here,? said Dr. Tony Forshey, the state?s veterinarian, in a recent interview. ?We don?t know how many is out there.?

Rough estimates by the department put the number of dangerous animals in the state close to 640, which includes venomous snakes. Officials acknowledge that figure is just a guess. It?s based on information from owners who are licensed with state or the U.S. Department of Agriculture, along with reports from law enforcement.

Forshey said he expects that it will take time to figure out how many dangerous creatures are in Ohio. But, he said, the state is better equipped once the bill becomes law.

The state?s Agriculture Department hopes to get the word out to owners about registering their animals through organizations such as the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, zoo associations and veterinarians.

State agencies, the USDA and wildlife experts from as far away as California will meet next month to put together a list of potential animal sanctuaries and rescue facilities for unwanted or uncared for animals, Forshey said.

Michael Pacther of Wedbush Morgan believes this could be the start of a new trend. "I think the key is that the next generation consoles might only be sold this way, so instead of charging $300 ? 600 for a console, charge $99 and sign people up to a ?data? plan (like mobile carriers), charging enough to cover the cost of the hardware.

"Still, I think it's necessary to add real consumer value -- such as open access to free downloadable or streaming games, video and other multimedia --?to justify a monthly fee in the $10 to $20 range. ?A play by Google or Apple would likely offer more consumer value for far less, creating a very competitive ecosystem for more dedicated gaming plays."

?Computer simulations already show that the locomotive is about as powerful as two modern passenger diesel locomotives,? Davidson Ward, president of the Coalition for Sustainable Rail, told me Thursday.

?But it will burn carbon neutral fuel.?

The biocoal is based on a so-called torrefaction process pioneered at the University of Minnesota in Duluth. To make it, woody material ? in this case trees ? are heated in the absence of oxygen. The resulting flaky matter is then rammed together under high pressure to create coal-like bricks.

Biocoal has the same energy density as regular coal, but is cleaner burning, and since trees (the fuel source) sequester carbon as they grow, the system is considered carbon neutral, according to Ward.

The heat used to process the fuel comes from biogas, which makes the process 94 to 96 percent thermally efficient, he said.

?So you actually do have something that is as close to carbon neutral as possible,? he noted.

The biocoal will be used to power a 1937 steam locomotive that is being upgraded with a more efficient fire box, boiler and other parts ? though using the same design principles as a traditional steam locomotive.

?It is kind of like the windmill,? Ward said. ?Windmills are very old inventions, but you can modernize it and make it more efficient and apply it today.?

With sufficient funding, the team expects their made-over train to light up the rails sometime in the next two to six years.?

The train will be classified as "higher-speed," which means it can travel on the same rail network as Amtrak and freight trains.?

Rails for high-speed trains, which go 150 to 220 miles per hour, require more specialized tracks.

Today, most higher-speed passenger trains are diesel-electric locomotives, which generate their peak horsepower at low speeds ? about 25 miles per hour. Steam locomotives, by contrast, get their peak horsepower at higher speeds ? about 40 miles per hour.

"Initial computer simulations suggest that the CSR's modern steam engine will significantly out-accelerate a modern diesel-electric locomotive to 110 mph," according to the coalition's website.?

In addition to trains, the steam engine technology can be used to create ?self-contained energy generation units? that could be shipped to the developing world, including the torrifier.

And since these units are based on age-old steam engine technology, they won?t require high-tech skills to perform routine maintenance or fix broken parts.?

The train itself, which Ward?s organization acquired from a museum in Kansas, is considered a proof-principle project. If all goes according to plan, they might build a new steam locomotive from scratch, which will have some modern looks.
