ScienceDaily (Feb. 27, 2012) ? Scientists from the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawaii -- Manoa (UHM) and colleagues recently discovered that land-based plant material and coastal macroalgae indirectly support the increased abundances of bottom fish in submarine canyons, like those off the north shore of Moloka'i. Less than a few miles from the shore, these underwater canyons connect to deep river valleys that cut across the landscape of north Moloka'i. The high elevation and forested landscapes along Moloka'i's north shore provide plant material, including decomposing tree trunks, leaves and tons of kukui nuts, which enter the ocean via river valleys and 'pile up' on submarine canyon floors.

"In areas surrounded by very low productivity waters, this steady supply of organic matter to the canyons supports relatively high abundances of macro-invertebrates that live associated with the seafloor (either on top or in the top layers within the sediments), such as polychaete worms (related to earth worms), tiny crustaceans (amphipods, tanaids and isopods) and mollusks (like tiny clam- and snail-like creatures). Those invertebrates in turn serve as food for many fish species that live and feed near the seafloor," says Fabio De Leo, lead author and PhD candidate at the UHM Department of Oceanography. "Areas surveyed outside the canyons showed very little contribution of plant and macroalgae material, providing support for our hypothesis that this material is really being channeled and accumulates mostly in the steep topography of the submarine canyons (i.e., a 'canyon effect')," completes De Leo.

De Leo, his PhD advisor (Dr. Craig Smith), colleagues from SOEST (Dr. Jeff Drazen), from the Hawaii Pacific University (Dr. Eric Vetter), and from the New Zealand National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Dr. Ashley Rowden) used manned submersibles operated by the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory to perform numerous video transects in two submarine canyons off Moloka'i at depths ranging from 350 to 1,050 m (~1,000 to ~3,000 ft). Equipped with high-definition cameras and powerful light strobes the submersibles flew above the seafloor to quantitatively assess the presence of plant and macroalgae material and to count and identify all fish species.

This was among the first studies to quantitatively survey fish assemblages deeper than ~350 m around Hawaii, gathering more than 13 hours of video altogether. Among the most abundant species found were the so-called 'rattail' fishes (family Macrouridae) and the 'eel-like' fishes (synaphobranchids and halosaurs). Giant shark specimens were also observed but only when the submersible was stationary and not during the video transects. Therefore, that species was not included in the quantitative analysis. De Leo narrates how scary it was when he got 'face-to-face' with a 10-foot 'sixgill shark' with only the submersible's porthole separating his from the shark's nose, as the giant approached the submersible and hit the thick glass window with its face. "Wow, it was definitely a nerve-wracking sensation. I even dropped my video camera while trying to make good footage of the beast."

The researchers also report some unexpected results. They found that this 'canyon effect' of enhancing fish abundances is obliterated at intermediate depths (around 650 m) coinciding exactly with the core of an oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) that flows around the Hawaiian archipelago around those depths. An OMZ is a layer of seawater usually at subsurface that has depleted oxygen concentrations due to several biological and chemical processes, including excess respiration by microbes. This may be indicating that the bottom fish species are somewhat sensitive to the low oxygen concentrations in the water. This result corroborates previous studies that found low abundances and diversity of deep-sea scavenger animals at similar depths around Hawaii. "The expansion of OMZs in different parts of the oceans is of great concern among oceanographers, and it is thought to be one of the main effects related to climate/ocean warming." De Leo attended the annual Ocean Sciences Meeting in Salt Lake City last week and reports that the expansion of these low oxygen ocean layers was one of the hot topics discussed at the meeting. "We should definitely keep track of near future and long term effects of expansion of low oxygen zones and how this will affect a variety of marine organisms, including fish."

In hopes of understanding what other factors lead to an increase in the number and diversity of marine animals inside these abrupt topographic features, De Leo and colleagues are analyzing data on the abundance and diversity of macro-invertebrates that live associated with the seafloor in six other submarine canyons around Hawaii. There is an increasing body of evidence that suggests that canyons are a special type of topographic feature in the seafloor no matter in what oceanographic background they are located (i.e., highly productive continental margins or in a low productivity setting, such as an island margin like Hawaii). "With the goal of protecting ecologically important habitat and preserving biodiversity, this information is crucial when performing marine spatial planning and designing networks of Marine Protected Areas," says De Leo.

This research was supported by NOAA Ocean Exploration and by the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory.

Love at first bite? No. Love at first sip? Yes. Today I share with you my favourite drink, a KiBa, or cherry banana juice. My first KiBa experience is somewhat hazy....it was in a little bar in the south of Germany on a cold Winter's night. To beat the chill, I ordered a hot water. Yes, certainly the safest drink to consume in a crowded bar. Having finished the hot water and about to order another one, a friend recommended I try a KiBa. It sounded very strange to me; cherry and banana?

I ordered the drink and surprise surprise it was amazing! It's cherry and banana! Together! From that moment, my drink of choice was always KiBa. It was my drink of Germany.

I wonder why this wonderful mix of liquids has not found its way over to Australia; we have cherries, we have bananas and we have juice manufacturing plants. Yet, our bars and other venues where one can purchase a beverage are full of boring non alcoholic drinks such as soft drinks, orange juice and....soft drink.

In Germany many foods are available in cherry banana flavour, including tea, yoghurt, butter milk, lollies, pre mixed juices, cake, quark, ice cream and jam! We're missing out. Unfortunately, one cannot buy the full range of German foods at Australian Aldi stores either. Even more disappointing for me is the fact that there is not even one Aldi in Adelaide!

Germany is definately a 'love at first bite' destination. It's not all Schnitzel, Sauerkraut and beer. Infact, I never had Schnitzel when I was there. Although, I did live above a Schnitzel restaurant where the menu featured twenty different kinds of schnitzel. I miss Germany so much!

My favourite German foods #1 (top to bottom, left to right): Kalterhund - a rich chocolate, copha biscuit cake. Samba - a hazelnut spread which is even better than Nutella! German breakfast/brunch - Mmmm. Pfluemli - plum puree for your bread which I used to roll up in turkey slices

My favourite German foods #2 (top to bottom, left to right): Spaghetti Eis (spaghetti icecream); icecream put through some soft of machine to make it look like spaghetti, on top of a lump of cream, topped with sauce and chocolate. Pommes - hot chips with a range of toppings. Eszet Schnitten - chocolate slices for your toast in the morning. Bunte Eier - colourful pre boiled eggs for picnics/lunch boxes

The hardest part of preparing this drink in Australia is sourcing the two ingredients. Ideally, you require banana and cherry nectar, not juice. The closest thing I found to banana nectar/juice was a banana, pear and apple juice from the Polish shop, Sevenhills, in the Adelaide Central Market. I required a striaght banana juice and therefore made my own.

Cherry nectar/juice also proved difficult to find. I could find berry juices, some containing a small percentage of cherry, but no straight cherry juice. I did see a carton of German Sauerkirsch (sour cherry) juice at Sevenhills, but I did not purchase it at that very moment as I did not want to carry it around for two hours. Upon my return to the shop later in the evening, it was gone!

The closet thing I found to cherry nectar/juice, with a whole 10% cherries!

In Coles I found a litre bottle of apple and cherry juice from the good people at Ashton Valley Crush. Con - it was not straight cherry juice. Pro - with 90% apple, 10% cherry and no added sugar, preservatives or scary ingredients, it was definitely healthier than what I was actually looking to buy.

KiBa - Cherry banana juice?
Makes 3 medium sized drinks.
The straw is important - this way you can chose if you want to drink the banana or cherry part of the drink.
Reading up on the drink, some people recommend that the banana be cold and the cherry be at room temperature. I followed these recommendations.

What you need

• Approx 500ml cherry nectar/juice (or the closet thing you can find to cherry nectar/juice - I used apple and cherry)
• 4 bananas, cold (place in the fridge for a few hours)
• Drinking straws

What you need to do

1. Peel the bananas, chop into pieces and place into a bowl.
2. Mash the bananas with a fork and puree further using a stick blender.
3. To achieve a drinkable consistency, add water, teaspoon by teaspoon to the banana puree. Once it is thin enough to drink through a straw, it is ready.
4. If the puree is no longer cold, place into the freezer until it cools.
5. Fill up three glasses half way with banana puree.
6. Slowly pour the cherry nectar/juice into the glasses.
7. Place a straw into each glass and enjoy:)

The drink was pleasant, refreshing and actually healthy. The banana puree could have been thinned out a bit more which I think would have given the drink more of a marbled effect. The only disappointment was that the 'cherry' part tasted like apple. If I happen to find some cherry nectar or plain cherry juice, I will buy it and make the drink again. But yes, nothing wrong with the drink, it was good:)
Banana puree is also great on its own. If you cannot find any sort of cherry juice, you could just drink pureed banana:)

Parents: Cancer drug that could help their son isn&#39;t available - WAVE ...

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE)?- It's a life or death situation that has hospitals around the country and right here in Kentuckiana scrambling.?A cancer drug that treats thousands of children with Leukemia is in?desperate short supply and is no longer being produced.

There are children who need the drug at Kosair Children's Hospital. Kosair officials tell WAVE 3 News,?they have a two week supply.?

Members of one of those families is speaking out to WAVE 3 in the hopes of helping their child and all the others just like him.

Middle schooler Owen McMasters loves playing video games and sports but, four months ago the 12-year-old's normal life took a tragic turn. "One night my mom was checking me out and she felt enlarged lymph nodes all over my neck," Owen said.

Since being diagnosed in November with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia or (ALL), Owen has been getting overwhelming family support. His cousins, uncles and brothers all shaved their heads in solidarity.

But, it's what he can't get March 9, that has his family so upset.

That's the date he's scheduled to begin a high dose of the chemotherapy drug Methotrexate: A life saving drug for thousands of kids with ALL.

A few months ago, one of the nation's largest suppliers suspended the drug's production.

Pharmacists say it's gone from the shelves and the supply will run out in two weeks.

"Now, we face the threat that there will be children that will not be cured of their cancer because we can't produce a 50 year old generic drug that has been available for a long time and should never be in short supply," said Owen's dad Dr. Kelly McMasters.

Mom Beth added of her son's needed drug,"It's hard enough to see him sick but, to think that he couldn't have something is unbelievable."

Up to 90 percent of children survive ALL, if they get the medication.?

The situation is especially frustrating to his Kelly McMasters because he's a surgical oncologist.?He told us, "I'm a surgeon so, if there's a problem I'm used to cutting it out and I can't fix this one by cutting it out."

How could this happen?

"There's no profit motive for companies to produce these generic drugs that sell for very little cost," Dr. McMasters told WAVE 3 News, "the Methotrexate for example, that Owen needs in a couple of weeks from now costs $1.58 per vial."

Some of Owen's other drugs cost thousands of dollars for a single dose. "These very expensive drugs Owen gets," his dad explained, "we never have shortages of those."

The Make A Wish Foundation recently asked Owen if he had a hero he would like to meet or a fun trip he would like to take.

Owen told us, "For my Make A Wish, I just want to solve this Methotrexate shortage." He hopes by getting the word out other people will help kids like him by contacting their lawmakers.

His mom Beth added, "Government wants to get involved all over the place and this is the place it's needed."

"This is an absolute national embarrassment, " said Dr. McMasters, "that we can't produce a 50 year old chemotherapy drug that's needed to cure children of their cancer?"

Methotrexate is just one of many generic drugs in short supply.

Other countries are producing the drug. The FDA has the authority to import it.

Several months ago, President Obama signed an executive order giving the FDA some power with drug shortages but critics say, it doesn't have enough teeth.

Of course, others aren?t so sure that there?s much benefit to organic foods, and some even argue that the organic label is more a status symbol than anything else.

Now what about wild vs farmed? Some people think that farmed salmon is always bad. Others, like food-policy expert James McWilliams, argue that for whatever its current flaws, farmed fish provides our best hope for a future that includes significant amounts of protein at acceptable environmental costs. Eating wild fish, on the other hand, puts pressure on fragile wild populations.

But still, there are plenty of people who are dedicated to eating organic, and plenty of people who are quite insistant upon eating only wild fish.

The problem is, you can?t have it both ways. Wild salmon cannot, by definition, be organic, because it?s impossible to control what wild salmon eats. It can only be truly organic if it?s raised in captivity. Damned if you do, damned if you don?t.

This is just one tiny example of the challenges of ethical consumerism. Any given product can embody any number of incommensurable values ? values that can?t just be added up to arrive at a total ?ethics quotient.? The same problem applies to wind power (which produces no air pollution but kills birds) and oil from Canada?s oil sands. (which is produced in a democracy but is environmentally-dodgy).

Of course, none of that means that it?s not worth some effort to try to buy conscientiously. It just means that, as often as not, values-based consumerism is going to mean purchasing according to values that matter to you, rather than hoping to buy in a way that is ?truly ethical,? in some grander sense.
