Why Women Report Being in Worse Health than Men (LiveScience.com)

When asked to rate their own health, women, on average, consistently report being in worse health than men do, and a new study from researchers in Spain says this is because women have a higher rate of chronic diseases ? contradicting a previous theory that women's lower self-rated health is simply a reporting bias.

"In general practice, there has been this idea that women over-report health problems, or are more likely to say they are ill or pay attention to their symptoms than men," said first author of the study Davide Malmusi, of the Public Health Agency of Barcelona. "We wanted to test whether their differences in self-reported health could in fact be explained by the difference in the prevalence of chronic conditions."

The new findings were published Dec. 16 in the European Journal of Public Health.

Self-reporting health

Malmusi and colleagues across Spain gathered data from Spain's 2006 National Health Survey, which included data from face-to-face interviews with more than 29,000 people on their health. About half of the study participants were between the ages of 16 and 44; the other half was older.

The survey included the question, "Over the last 12 months, would you say your overall health has been very good, good, fair, poor, or very poor?" as well as a question on whether health problems had limited people's activities over the previous six months.

Of the women interviewed, 38.8 percent rated their health as poor or very poor, and 25.7 percent reported chronic limitation of activity. Of the men in the study, only 27 percent had poor self-rated health, and 19.3 percent reported chronic limitation of activity.

But when the researchers matched up the number of chronic conditions each person had with his or her health rating, the gender difference disappeared. Having a higher number of chronic conditions correlated with poorer self-rated health to the same degree in both genders.?

For men and women with the same conditions, or the same number of conditions, women were no more likely to claim poorer health.

"There's been a longstanding debate about whether women's self-reported health is a reporting bias or not," said sociologist Ellen Annandale of the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, who was uninvolved in the new work. "Some researchers argue that women might over-report health problems, and men might under-report. This study supports wider research that women's poorer self-reported health reflects underlying chronic health problems."

The root of chronic health problems

What the new study doesn't answer, Annandale said, is why women have a higher rate of chronic health problems. The data did reveal that women's higher rate of chronic problems can be most strongly attributed to five chronic disorders: arthritis, mental disorders, neck pain, headaches and back pain. But further research will be needed to explain why.

Malmusi said it is likely a mix of biological and social factors.

"Gender influences that way that people are treated and diagnosed in health systems," Annandale said. "It influences the kind of health conditions that men and women suffer from, the way people relate to their own bodies, and what kind of access to health care they have."

Understanding gender differences in health can help scientists and doctors find ways to better treat patients, she said.

?"Women generally live longer than men, but in many countries that gap in life expectancy has been decreasing over time. One of the reasons for that is thought to be that men's health is improving, but women's is not."

Pass it on: ?The fact that women generally rank their health poorer than men do correlates to a higher rate of chronic health problems, not a higher likelihood to complain about their health or pay attention to symptoms.

NBA Commissioner Turns Boos Into Cheers

NBA Commissioner David Stern visited Dallas to start the lockout-shortened season on Christmas Day. The Mavericks were raising their banner from last season's championship. But when Stern spoke, people booed. The lockout wasn't popular, and Mavericks owner Mark Cuban didn't like the settlement. Stern won over the home crowd though, praising Cuban and turning boos to cheers.

Iran says it's easy to close Strait of Hormuz

(AP) ? Iran's navy chief says his country can easily close the strategic Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, the passageway through which a sixth of the world's oil flows.

Adm. Habibollah Sayyari told state-run Press TV Wednesday that the navy is in control of the vital waterway and can readily block it. It was the second such warning from a senior official in two days.

Vice President Mohamed Reza Rahimi threatened Tuesday that Iran will close the strait, cutting off oil exports, if the West imposes sanctions on Iranian oil shipments to punish Tehran for its nuclear program, which the west suspects is aimed at making weapons.

Company sues former employee over Twitter followers

Noah Kravitz, of Oakland, California, worked as a product reviewer and video blogger for South Carolina-based PhoneDog from 2006 to 2010, according to the lawsuit filed in the US District Court for Northern California.

Kravitz told the New York Times that he had left PhoneDog on good terms with an agreement that he would "tweet on their behalf from time to time".

Eight months later, however, the company filed suit against him, a move Kravitz told the newspaper was retaliation for his claim to 15 per cent of PhoneDog's gross advertising revenue.

In a statement to the Times, the company said: "The costs and resources invested by PhoneDog Media into growing its followers, fans and general brand awareness through social media are substantial and are considered property of PhoneDog Media.

"We intend to aggressively protect our customer lists and confidential information, intellectual property, trademark and brands," it said.

Henry Cittone, an intellectual property lawyer, told the Times the case will "establish precedent in the online world, as it relates to ownership of social media accounts.

"We've actually been waiting to see such a case as many of our clients are concerned about the ownership of social media accounts vis-?-vis their branding," Cittone said.

Browns Coach Shurmur Finally Takes Blame for Mistakes in Loss

Pat Shurmur finally is stepping up and taking blame, saying the mistakes from the Christmas Eve loss to the Ravens is on him.

Two unreal blunders on Saturday in Baltimore were costly in a 20-14 loss to the Ravens. Browns backup quarterback Seneca Wallace botched a scoring opportunity at the end of the first half and rookie defensive tackle Phil Taylor jumped offside on fourth down in the final two minutes to seal Baltimore?s win.

Shurmur said there are no excuses and the Browns ?have to play smarter.?

Shurmur also had no update on quarterback Colt McCoy, who hasn?t been cleared to practice since suffering a concussion December 8th against Pittsburgh. Shurmur said McCoy took part in team meetings Monday and the team won?t know until Wednesday if he?ll be able to practice.

A lot of games don?t work, but for the ones that do, they?re definitely enjoyable to play. Longtime CCC board member killed in Union Mills Road accident

Union Mills Road saw its second fatality in a little over a month on Thursday evening when a car traveled off the road and into a ditch near Union Mills Feed, killing a prominent Oregon City man.
?
Charles ?Chuck? A. Clemans, 77, was pronounced dead at the accident scene around 6 p.m. on Dec. 22. Clemans?had served on the Clackamas Community College Board of Education since 2001?and was a former superintendent of Oregon City School District.
?
Clackamas County Sheriff?s Office and Molalla Fire District were called to the accident scene after neighbors discovered a car in the ditch along S. Union Mills Road near S. Ringo Road., said CCSO Deputy Marcus Mendoza.
?
?It appears on that curve the driver was traveling westbound and he just went straight off the road,? Mendoza said. ?So far, we don?t have any witnesses.?
?
Emergency responders checked the area to make sure no one had been ejected from the vehicle, which landed in a ditch covered in heavy brush with a seasonal creek flowing through. Clemans was the vehicle?s sole occupant, Mendoza said.
?
CCSO deputies and a deputy medical examiner investigated at the crash scene and do not believe that poor road conditions or alcohol were factors in the accident.
?
?We have some information that the driver had some medical problems, so we?re thinking based on everything we?ve seen that that?s more than likely going to be a major role in the crash,? Mendoza said.
?
The medical examiner is expected to conduct an autopsy.
?
Another fatal accident occurred about a mile away on S. Union Mills Road on Nov. 13, taking the life of Geri Burbank, 54, of Molalla.
?
Union Mills Road remained open throughout the duration of?Thursday evening's?investigation, since adequate parking for police and fire vehicles was available at the feed store, Mendoza said.
?
Clemans was named Citizen of the Year in Oregon City in 2009 for his heavy involvement in volunteer efforts and the community. He previously served as president of the Oregon City Chamber of Commerce and Regional Arts and Culture Council and also served on the Portland Center for the Performing Arts Board and the Clackamas County Arts Alliance, among others, according to Oregon City?s municipal website.
?
Clemans was a teacher and administrator for Portland Public Schools from 1956 to 1980, before serving 10 years as Oregon City School District?s superintendent until his retirement in 1990, according to the CCC website.
?
Clackamas Community College recently named an endowment in his honor. The Charles A. Clemans Campus Art Endowment will help the campus acquire artwork. They also named the college?s design lab in the Art Center after him.

The GOP's 'make-or-break' Sioux City debate: Winners and losers (The Week)

New York ? The Republican presidential candidates made their closing arguments in the final forum before Iowa's Jan. 3 caucuses. Did anyone gain a last-minute edge?

Frontrunner Newt Gingrich was on the defensive ? again ? as the Republican candidates made their closing appeals to voters in the last debate before the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses officially launch primary season (and inevitably weed out a candidate or two). Gingrich fended off competitors' claims that he's an unreliable conservative, calling them "laughable," and defended his consulting work for Fannie Mae. His chief rival, Mitt Romney, tried to stay above the fray and focus his attacks on President Obama. Who came out best in Sioux City's "make-or-break" debate? Here, a consensus list of the winners and losers:

WINNERS
Mitt Romney
Among the three candidates with any chance of winning Iowa, says Doug Mataconis at Outside the Beltway, "the one that seemed to mostly dodge the fire this time around was Mitt Romney." He took the usual hits on the Massachusetts health care law and his history at Bain Capital, but he wasn't attacked nearly as aggressively as his chief rival Gingrich. "This may end up benefiting Romney in the long run since it seemed, once again, like he was the cool, calm guy standing above the fray while all the other candidates fought amongst themselves."

SEE MORE: Should GOP candidates skip Donald Trump's debate?

?

Michele Bachmann
The Tea Party favorite has tumbled since winning the Iowa straw poll in August, says Shawna Shepherd at CNN, but Bachmann held her own this time. She "had the sharpest attack lines" against Gingrich, saying he has made money through "influence-peddling," even if he's not technically a lobbyist. And she drew applause by calling Ron Paul's anti-war Iran policy the most "dangerous answer for American security" she's ever heard. Bachmann came off as a "true-blue conservative," says William Kristol in The Weekly Standard. This performance might be what she needed to start climbing back into the first-tier.

Newt Gingrich
The man to beat "did face criticism," says Kathie Obradovich at the Des Moines Register, "but it wasn't the open season on Gingrich that the Dec. 10 debate featured." The former House speaker "parried attacks for most of the first hour," and "gained back ground he may have lost in the second half." And the debate closed with the moderators handing Gingrich "a sugarplum," by making everyone "defend negative attacks on each other and giving Gingrich a chance to proclaim his positive campaign." Not a bad final impression with which to leave voters before a crucial vote.

LOSERS
Newt Gingrich
The "new Newt" ? the cool, unflappable frontrunner ? was on display much of the night, says Frank James at NPR. "But there were times when old Newt, the consummate Washington insider or proposer of crazy ideas, made an appearance." In those moments Gingrich did nothing to soothe the conservatives he needs to win the primaries, or the independents he would need in the general election.?

Ron Paul
Gingrich's most formidable rival in Iowa, according to polls, is Rep. Ron Paul, says Charles Babington at the Associated Press, but the libertarian-leaning Texan did himself no favors in Sioux City. He "expressed his anti-war, anti-interventionist views so vehemently that he may have turned off mainstream Republicans who otherwise might have helped him to a surprising first-place finish."

?

Fence-sitters
This was the last chance for GOP primary voters to examine the candidates together, says Dan Balz and Philip Rucker at The Washington Post, but "there was no clear winner Thursday night and no obvious loser." Nobody committed a campaign-sinking gaffe, "and some of the strongest performances were turned in by candidates in the lower tier of the competition." Even Romney, who needs to gain lost ground from Gingrich, refrained from "direct encounters" and aimed his sharpest criticism at Obama. If voters were hoping for a game-changer, they were disappointed.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama plans to deliver a statement Saturday following the Senate vote to approve legislation extending a Social Security payroll tax cut and long-term jobless benefits for two months.

The measure includes a provision pushed by Republicans that would pressure the White House to make a quick decision on approving construction of an oil pipeline from Canada to Texas that would create thousands of jobs.

The White House has said the president would sign the tax cuts extension because it met his test of "preventing a tax increase on 160 million hardworking Americans" and avoiding damage to the economy recovery.

"Batman" star roughed up in bid to visit Chinese blind (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? Hollywood actor Christian Bale was roughed up by Chinese security guards as he attempted to visit a blind legal activist whose detention has sparked a domestic and international outcry, CNN reported on Friday.

Bale, who plays crime-fighting superhero Batman, and the camera crew from CNN were jostled by men in plainclothes from Dongshigu village in eastern Shandong province, where activist Chen Guangcheng has been under house arrest for 15 months, according to a video released by CNN on its website.

"Why can I not visit this man?" Bale asked several security officers, while they were pushing him.

"You know, I'm not being brave doing this," Bale told CNN. "The local people who are standing up to the authorities and insisting on going to visit Chen and his family and getting beaten up for it, and my understanding, getting detained for it and everything. I want to support what they are doing."

CNN said the guards shadowed its van for more than half an hour.

The fate of Chen, a self-schooled advocate who has campaigned against forced abortions, has become a test of wills, pitting the Communist Party's crackdown on dissent against activists championing his cause and that of artist Ai Weiwei.

In recent months, dozens of supporters have been blocked from visiting Chen. Many were beaten by men in plain clothes.

CNN said that Bale, who is in China for the premiere of his latest film "The Flowers of War," approached the news network to try to meet Chen. They took an eight-hour car journey to Chen's village from Beijing.

"This doesn't come naturally to me," Bale said to CNN. "But this was just a situation, I said, I can't look the other way."

Internet users took to the Twitter-like microblogging service, Weibo, to applaud Bale's visit to see the "blind man." Aauthorities have blocked searches for "Chen Guangcheng."

"Mr. Bale, I admire your courage and heart," said a microblogger called "Chen Xiaoying wants to support."

"But next time if you want to save a person, remember to wear your Batman suit. The Chinese official media will not report this, it's up to CNN to broadcast it."

Chen angered Shandong officials in 2005 by exposing a program of forced abortions as part of China's one-child policy. He was formally released in September 2010 after four years in jail on a charge of "blocking traffic."

"What I really wanted to do is to shake the man's hand and say: 'Thank you,' and tell him what an inspiration he is," Bale told CNN.

OPEC oil deal puts Saudi back in charge (Reuters)

VIENNA (Reuters) ? OPEC oil producers on Wednesday sealed their first new output agreement in three years in a deal that settles a 6-month-old argument over supply policy firmly in Saudi Arabia's favor.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries agreed a target of 30 million barrels daily, ratifying current production near 3-year highs. It did not discuss individual national quotas.

The deal vindicates Saudi Arabia after its proposal to raise output in June to stem rising prices was rejected by price hawks led by Iran, Algeria and Venezuela.

"For the Saudis it's a fantastic decision," said Jamie Webster of Washington consultancy PFC Energy.

Saudi said it pumped 10 million barrels a day last month, in what Gulf delegates said was a demonstration of strength to the price hawks ahead of the meeting.

In theory the agreement caps output for all 12 OPEC members for the first half of 2012 at levels that should permit a modest rebuilding of lean global inventories.

"We're not going to bypass it, we're going to adhere to it," promised OPEC Secretary General Abdullah al-Badri of the new supply limit. "Saudi Arabia will abide by this decision for sure."

That will depend on whether or not Saudi and its Gulf Arab allies decide to ease back supply as post-civil war Libya heads towards full production, or keep the taps open to drive oil below $100 a barrel.

Saudi Arabia Naimi did not allay the doubts.

"If Libya increases it doesn't necessarily mean Saudi will cut," said Saudi Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi. "We don't react to that, we react to market demand," he said.

Oil analysts warned that without defined individual national quotas, leakage above the new limit was very possible.

"Someone has to cut back to accommodate Libya, that has to be done," said analyst Lawrence Eagles of JP Morgan. "As always with OPEC the proof will be in the pudding. How closely will they stick to the new limit?"

"The whole organization has to be at 30 million so if someone goes up somebody else should come down. But it's like anything when you divide responsibility -- it often ends up falling through the cracks," said Webster of PFC.

Rising supply from Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies has kept a leash on oil prices as Riyadh seeks to help nurture global growth by keeping fuel costs under control.

Brent eased nearly $3 on Wednesday to below $107 a barrel, down from a year-high $127 in April.

HAWKS WANT NO LESS THAN $100

OPEC's price hawks, all of whom already pump at full capacity, want to keep prices above $100.

"We think the present level is appropriate for producers and consumers," Algerian Oil Minister Youcef Yousfi said of prices.

"Prices are reasonable," said Iranian Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi.

The Gulf Arab producers would prefer prices that don't hinder economic growth while meeting their budget and oil investment needs. The UAE said recently that $80-$100 was reasonable.

"Saudi Arabia is the central banker of the oil market and the decision that they will bring more oil to the market is definitely a good one," said Fatih Birol, chief economist at consumer body the International Energy Agency.

World oil inventories should now rise, boosted by Libyan oil output that hit 1 million bpd this week on the way back to pre-war output of 1.6 million.

OPEC's secretariat calculates that 30 million barrels a day from the group will meet demand in the first half of the year and build stocks by 650,000 bpd.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration that would lift inventories among industrialized OECD nations from 56 days of OECD demand now to 60 days by the middle of 2012.

OPEC next meets on June 14. Badri said point OPEC would be ready by then to tackle the tricky issue of re-establishing individual quotas.

Ask Lambda Legal ? HIV Criminalization | Lavender Magazine

By Scott Schoettes, HIV Project Director for Lambda Legal

Dear Ask Lambda Legal,

I?m HIV positive and recently heard about someone getting incarcerated after a sexual encounter, all because of his HIV status. Can this really happen?

Thirty years after the discovery of HIV, the medical field has learned a great about the virus, its transmission, and effective treatments. Unfortunately, the legal landscape has not changed as quickly, and people living with HIV are vulnerable to outdated statutes that specifically target them. Ending HIV criminalization in the United States is a priority for Lambda Legal ? these laws unfairly subject people with absolutely no intent to harm anyone to criminal sanctions usually reserved for truly egregious offenses. In addition, criminal laws based on a person?s HIV status send an inaccurate message regarding prevention responsibility, create a disincentive to getting tested, and may actually discourage disclosure of HIV status.

Thirty-nine states have HIV-specific criminal statutes or have brought HIV-related criminal charges resulting in more than 80 prosecutions in the United States in the past two years alone. In People v. Allen, a Michigan man living with HIV was charged under the state?s anti-terrorism statute with possession of a ?biological weapon? after an altercation with a neighbor?prosecutors equated his HIV infection with ?possession or use of a harmful device.? Lambda Legal assisted in convincing the court to dismiss this charge, but other prosecutions continue to result in convictions. ?For instance, a man with HIV in Iowa, who had an undetectable viral load, was sentenced to 25 years after a one-time sexual encounter during which he used a condom. You can learn what laws are in place in your state on our publications page at http://www.lambdalegal.org/publications/fs_hiv-criminalization .

HIV criminalization is particularly concerning for groups that are disproportionately affected by HIV. In 2008, one in five of men who have sex with men in 21 major US cities were infected with HIV, and nearly half were unaware of their infection. In 2009, African Americans comprised 14% of the US population but accounted for 44% of all new HIV infections. In the same year, Latinos accounted for 20% of new HIV infections in the United States while representing about 16% of the total US population. In 2008, in California, 6.8% of transgender people were HIV positive, and African Americans within the transgender population of California had an infection rate of nearly 29%.

Lambda Legal has aligned itself with the Positive Justice Project (PJP), a working consortium devoted to ending the abusive application of criminal statutes against people living with HIV. Along with PJP, Lambda Legal is working toward passing the REPEAL HIV Discrimination Act, federal legislation that would require a review of all federal and state laws, policies, and regulations regarding the criminal prosecution of individuals for HIV-related offenses.

Preg?ntale a Lambda Legal ?

Bid to block first Gulf leases since BP spill

The Deepwater Horizon drilling rig burns on April 21, 2010.

By Miguel Llanos, msnbc.com

A day before?the Obama administration aims to showcase?that the Gulf of Mexico is ready for new?drilling, environmental groups on Tuesday sued to try to stop the?leases.

The Interior Department's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the coalition argues in?its?complaint,?relies on an environmental impact statement that:

  • "Fails to adequately consider the impacts of the Deepwater Horizon spill;
  • "Does not incorporate new understandings of the risks posed by offshore driling, particularly in deepwater;
  • "Ignores new information?regarding the oil spill containment and response capabilities of industry; and
  • "Fails to assess impacts using a post Deepwater Horizon baseline for species and habitats in the Gulf."

Catherine Wannamaker, an attorney representing the coalition in court, called it "illegal and irresponsible" for "the government and oil companies to return to business as usual without considering the oil spill?s impacts on the Gulf."

"We did not ask for an injunction of tomorrow?s sale, though we have apprised the government of our case and asked that they delay the sale or at a minimum notify bidders of the lawsuit," Wannamaker told msnbc.com. "We have not heard an answer, but my guess is that the sale will commence tomorrow."

The administration on Wednesday intends to announce the winners of the first oil and gas lease sale in the Gulf?since the BP spill.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar will even travel to New Orleans "to mark a major milestone in jumpstarting restoration of the Gulf region," the department said in a statement.

Twenty companies have submitted 241 bids on 191 tracts off Texas, the department added.

Following the Deepwater Horizon explosion on April 20, 2010, which killed 11 men and led to the worst U.S. oil spill, the Interior Department reorganized how it regulates the offshore energy industry.

BP and partners Transocean and Halliburton have been cited in various government reports as sharing responsibility for the disaster. The reports?have also urged changes in corporate?and regulatory culture, but many of?the recommendations have yet to be implemented.

The National?Academy of Engineering and National Research Council are coming out with their offshore drilling?recommendations on Wednesday.

Tuesday's complaint was filed before the District Court in Washington, D.C., by Oceana, Defenders of Wildlife, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Center for Biological Diversity.

The judge hearing the complaint is not required to rule before Wednesday's sale.

But if "the judge ultimately decides in our favor," Oceana campaign director Jackie Savitz told msnbc.com, "the government may have to buy back the leases."

Exclusive: EU thinks twice about Iran oil ban (Reuters)

NEW DELHI/LONDON (Reuters) ? The European Union is becoming skeptical about slapping sanctions on imports of Iranian oil, diplomats and traders say, as awareness grows that the embargo could damage its own economy without doing much to undercut to Iran's oil revenues.

Oil accounts for 50 percent of Iranian budget revenues, and those arguing for sanctions say they can deprive Tehran of billions of dollars and derail what the West sees as Iran's attempts to build a nuclear bomb.

But diplomats and oil industry insiders say Europe may calculate that even a small rise in oil prices as a result of an introduction of an EU-wide embargo would more than compensate Tehran for any losses from being obliged to re-route displaced supplies to Asia at discounted prices.

"Maybe the aim of sanctions is to help Italy, Spain and Greece to collapse and make the EU a smaller club," one trader joked.

The remark reflects the growing unease that EU sanctions would hit hardest some of the continent's weakest economies, because Iranian oil provides the highest share of their needs, not to mention the rest of the bloc.

"The likely increase in oil prices that would result from a ban would be felt by all (European) oil refiners, not just those that are big customers for Iranian oil," ratings agency Fitch said last week.

An oil industry source in Greece, which mostly relies on Iranian oil, said: "Greece can't be put with its back to the wall."

The threat to Iran's oil exports and fears about a possible military strike on its nuclear facilities have helped keep oil prices above $100 a barrel despite sluggish global growth and a gradual return of Libyan oil supplies.

Iran, the world's fifth-largest oil exporter, has said it cannot rule out a self-imposed oil embargo to punish the West and on Sunday warned that oil prices could spike to $250 a barrel as a result of sanctions.

The United States has long banned Iranian oil imports and is now moving to ban dealings with the central bank of the Islamic Republic.

Supporters of sanctions say an EU ban would not amount to a supply disruption. Iranian oil displaced from Europe would flow to China, displacing existing sources of Chinese oil towards Europe. They say Beijing, as Iran's buyer of last resort, would then have the leverage to drive a hard bargain on prices.

However, calculations by U.S. research firms and traders show the discount could be as small as a couple of percentage points.

Sanctions critics say the regime of Iraqi former dictator Saddam Hussein was able to withstand sanctions for years.

SAUDI CONTINGENCY

"What's going to happen now is talks with the Saudis, Chinese, Koreans and Indians. Although the political will to impose the sanctions are there, they would only be effective if all the above players helped out -- not followed the sanctions but co-ordinated their response," said a Western diplomat.

Saudi Arabia, the only oil nation with spare capacity, faces a tough choice. Shipping more oil to Europe to replace lost Iranian barrels could mean ceding promising Asian markets to Iran, its political foe.

The Saudis have already started assessing the volume of Iranian supplies that go to their own big buyers.

"It is sort of a contingency plan to know to what extent they can fill the gap and minimize the impact on the market," the source familiar with the Saudi strategy said. "The Saudis want to know their options if something happens."

A source close to the Saudi oil industry in Europe also said Riyadh would consider raising supplies if Iranian oil was lost.

Saudi Arabia has already helped to substitute Iranian supplies once this year, when Tehran threatened to halt oil to India due to a payment dispute which followed U.S. pressure on New Delhi to reduce dealings with Iran.

This week, refiners in India, South Korea and Japan indicated they are reluctant to buy more Iranian crude, fearing that payments troubles could resurface again.

"To make sanctions effective, the Europeans would have to go to the Chinese to ask them not to take more oil," said a senior oil executive, who added that he did not expect sanctions to take place at least until the second quarter of 2012, when seasonal demand eases.

EU politicians have said a decision is unlikely before January at the earliest.

However, industry sources say China has repeatedly shown it is ready to absorb any incremental cheap supplies, especially given that Iran has offered no concession to China or any other buyers in negotiations underway for prices for 2012.

"Plants will be very happy to take more," said one source at China's Sinopec, Asia's largest refiner. "It's definitely good news to Chinese plants if that's the case."

UAE court sentences 5 political activists

A state security court in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday sentenced five activists who have campaigned for political freedoms in the oil-rich Gulf federation to prison terms of up to three years.

The UAE has faced an outcry from rights groups over the trials, which were held in the country's highest court that normally tries terrorism suspects and has no recourse for appeal.

The UAE has not been hit by the Arab Spring unrest that has spread across much of the rest of the Middle East, including neighboring Bahrain. But the activists' trial appears to reflect Abu Dhabi's strategy of snuffing out any sign of dissent that could pose a challenge to the tight political controls in country.

The three-judge panel sentenced one prominent blogger, Ahmed Mansour, to three years in prison. The others received two-year jail terms, including Nasser bin Gaith, an economist who has lectured at the Abu Dhabi branch of Paris' Sorbonne university. Bin Gaith also served as a legal adviser to the UAE's armed forces until April, when he was taken into custody from his Dubai home by federal security agents.

"I am disappointed," said defense lawyer Mohammed al-Roken. "The fact there is no appeal is very worrying since it does not meet all standards of fair trial."

The five were arrested in April after signing an online petition demanding political reforms, including a parliament selected by open elections. The charges included insulting the country's top leadership, endangering national security, inciting people to protest and urging them to boycott elections.

Political activity is severely restricted in the UAE, an alliance of seven semiautonomous states, each ruled by a hereditary sheik. There are no official opposition groups in the country and political parties are banned.

In an unprecedented move for the politically quiescent country, 130 people in March signed a petition demanding constitutional and parliamentary changes, free elections and a more equitable distribution of the country's oil wealth.

The five defendants have reportedly been on hunger strike for two weeks. They did not attend the sentencing Sunday. Since the trial began in June, the defendants only attended the first, closed-door hearing where they all pleaded not guilty. They've boycotted the proceedings since because the presiding judge had refused to consider their request to be released on bail.

After Sunday's verdict, dozens of men gathered in front of the court in a state-organized rally.

"Justice has been served," said Thabet al-Qaissieh, 29-year old businessman from Abu Dhabi. "I respect any decision of our nation's court. Were they pronounced innocent, I'd be the first to welcome them outside. But they have been convicted and the punishment is fair."

Only one relative of a defendant attended Sunday's hearing. Khalifa al-Nuaimi, bin Gaith's nephew, told reporters his family had hoped the court would "recognize his innocence" and order his release.

"This is a great shock to our family," al-Nuaimi told reporters outside the court. "This is unexpected and a very harsh judgment." Minutes later, al-Nuaimi was attacked by a government supporter, who punched him in the face amid a heavy police presence around the court.

The UAE marks its 40th anniversary of independence next week and some demonstrators suggested the activists could receive a presidential pardon. But the defendants have previously rejected the idea of a pardon unless it was accompanied by the entire case being thrown out.

Samer Muscati, a researcher for New York-based Human Rights Watch, called the proceedings "fundamentally unfair."

"It is highly disturbing that after almost eight months in jail, these men get to spend more time locked up on these ridiculous charges," he said.

The current federal parliament serves as an advisory body. Its 40 members are either directly appointed by the ruling sheiks or chosen by group citizens hand-picked according to tribal and regional ties by the rulers to vote.

The last such election ? only the second since the country's foundation ? was held in September. The electoral pool was significantly expanded and while the 129,000 voters still represent a fraction of the nearly 2 million Emiratis, the decision was seen as a concession by the rulers, under pressure from demands for reforms around the region.
